No one else has made the topic so I will!

I just picked up Mission Impossible 3, Da Vinci Code and Poseiden tonight from work. I'm hoping I enjoy them all, especially Poseiden, I'm afraid I'm not gonna like it. =P. We'll see.

And how did you come across those three on CD seeing as how they don't hit shelves until this coming Tuesday?

I work in a movie/music store. The store usually puts the soundtracks out over the weekend because they aren't big sellers. If you want the CDs early check the lesser known stores that aren't in Malls and stuff on Sundays. Most of them put the soundtracks and less known releases and such out between Saturday and Sunday so this way the Monday night workload isn't as big.

I guess that works. Thanks, I'll head out this weekend and see if I can track them down.

I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota... and there are like no small record shops around where I am... and it sucks! The only places I have to go to are Best Buy and Circuit City. There used to be Sam Good, but then when they started charging litterally $24.99 to $29.99 for CD's, they kinda closed down. Every once in a while Best Buy will accidently order a copy of what I want, and Cicuit City never has anything. Their soundtrack section is like 6 feet wide and 2 feet tall. Very sad... But, whenever they don't have what I want, I just order it from Peter.

Well. If it interests anyone here is what I think of the 3 new releases coming out Tuesday that I purchased Friday night. All of these are on a first listen so I'm sure I'll grow to like them more:

MI3: It's a good score. Some of it gets repetitive but I think that's just on my first listen. There's tons of action pieces that are quite catchie. The slow pieces are good as well. I'd give it a 4/5

Da Vinci Code: This is coincidentally the score that I liked the most out of the 3 I got and I'm not a huge Zimmer fan. A lot of people are saying some of the tracks sound the same in which they do, but they all have a different enviornment feeling to them. There were a lot of pieces that caught my ear. Fast spots and beautiful spots are all throughout this score. I'm officially 100% excited for this movie. 4/5

Poseidon: Out of all of them, this is the worst one. Not because the score itself is bad, but because there's 3 original songs, 2 by Fergie and one by some other artist. Can't stand when they do this, pick a format. Either all score..or all Various. I don't want to hear Fergie and some spanish artist. Maybe this is just my opinion but I'd rather here 40 minutes of score instead of under a half an hour and 13 minutes of music that I would never listen too. Following those two songs comes Klaus Badelts score which is UNDER A HALF AN HOUR. Total disappointment. I find it hard to believe that there is only 30 minutes worth of score in the movie. The score on the CD is actually pretty good but it is just to short..3/5

Scoreguy---check out Cheapo over in St. Paul (Applause is on the other side of the street and has classical and other soundtracks so you have to check both.)

    1. Da Vinci Code

Then, went bargain bin hunting and found these:

    2. Maigret (Petitgirard)
    3. Assassination of the Duke of Guise (Saint-Saens)--this is often credited as "the first film score"--1908
    4. Bronislau Kaper plays his Famous Film Themes
    5. Music of Charles Williams
    6. Ron Goodwin Conducts Film & TV Themes (this is an awesome disc with arrangements of other film music by Goodwin from his pops concerts in Britain)
    7. The Luzhin Defence (Desplat)

What'd you think of "Silence"? It took a lot of time for me to listen and enjoy it, but there's plenty of Shore trademarks and it's really a dramatic powerhouse, IMO. The sequence of Lector arriving in Memphis is a personal highlight for me.

Hopefully going to pick up M:i3 and Da Vinci on Tuesday. Both sound fantastic, and I thought M:i worked to great effect in the film.

Oh, I love Silence; I'm a huge fan of Demme's film and how Shore's score completes the atmosphere of the experience, and the MCA disc has eluded me for such a long time. When I asked Peter if it had gone OOP, he told me that MCA still had it as one of their top titles with a new, lower price and they added the "Music by Howard Shore" legend to the bottom. It really had him stumped as to why it was such a hard find for me but I've had a tough time with my entire Shore collection. Everything but the Milan re-mastered Naked Lunch, The Fly, and the LotR trilogy I've had to purchase off of various sources on the internet. I'm about three discs away of completing Shore's discography if my memory serves me correctly (I know off the top of my head I don't have the collection of his early stuff with Cronenberg). I also have the same problem with completing my Goldenthal collection.

    Gettysburg 2-CD Commemorative Edition
    $108.07 shipped.

Bought it from ebay used but in mint condition and it is an OOP score.

    The Matrix Complete 2-CD set
    $25.00

I know it's CD-R discs but frankly I don't care. I don't mind buying CD-R discs. I don't know how to use photoshop to make my own covers and disc pictures. I also don't have a printer.

If a lot of these full bootleg scores ever got a legit release I'd replace them with the real legit CD's in a heart beat.

I put the following on another thread, but I'll do a quick summary here -

THIS ISLAND EARTH (along with DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS etc) - The Herman Stein score is really great, the Goodwin hasn't made much impact yet. As re-recordings go, MMM are up there with the best.

THE ABOMINABLE DR PHIBES - An odd patchwork from various sources, but, my God, wasn't Basil Kirchin an amazing isiosyncratic talent? If only one of his other scores such as ASSIGNMENT K or I START COUNTING could be released. Perseverance were going to do THE SHUTTERED ROOM but the deal fell through. Still waiting for a CD which does Basil justice, though I'm glad I got PHIBES.

MICHAEL J LEWIS Orchestral Film Music promo - Cheap from Screen Archives. Not the original soundtracks, and a little over-ripe on the strings, but has some good stuff on it.

Lou, Go to the Berkshire Record Outlet site. You might be able to pick these up still. The Saint-Saens is on a low-priced issue from Harmonia Mundi--I think it has been reissued again here. It has his early piano quintet and a recording of Carnival of the Animals. Nice overview of his music.

The Williams disc has lots of small little pieces (like 20 some). The two standard familiar pieces (here anyway) are included. It's from the ASV British Light music series.

The surprise for me was the Goodwin with some of his arrangements of standard pops fare.

Just picked up Starship Troopers. I think it's one of Poledouris' best scores following Conan. The release isn't the greatest with only around 32 minutes of the score. There is a song at the end sung by Zoe Poledouris. A more complete score would have been better, but it is a must have.

Certainly one of this best scores. The CD is too short, but the sound quality is awesome. There's a full-CD version floating around which has really fine sound, but it would be nice to someday get an official expanded release with sound that matches the current version.

Which reminds me that I finally have to pick up the DVD. It's quite cheap in local stores, but the R2 version lacks the iso score & commentary track.

Well, to be honest - and I'm not entirely sure of your tastes so don't take this the wrong way - S.U.N may take a few listens to be fully appreciated by a casual Shore listener. I do love the Infernal Affairs trilogy; it's what got me back into Hong Kong cinema after all seemed lost now that John Woo was making craptastic American-shlock and both Jackie Chan and Jet Li seemed to have sold their souls to Hollywood. But alas, Wai Keung Lau and Siu Fai Mak gave me renewed hope (along with my undying loyalty to Kar-Wai Wong).

May the loyalty to Wong Kar Wai never end! (Unless his films betray his talents!)

With SUN, I have three problems:
    1. There are a couple of tracks where the cue is just waiting around for something to happen - that old video game music chestnut of being capable of looping for quite a while... it makes a couple of the track musically quite boring.
    2. The album is poorly structured. No climax... no finale - very weighted to the first six tracks.
    3. John Kurlander and Shore continue to frustrate with their mixing decisions... it always sounds like it's somewhere 'over there', never like you're caught up in it.

Anyway, despite these problems, it's pretty good stuff.

I've noticed this problem frequently with video game soundtracks; it's as if the first tracks are the weighted thematic material that plays over the FMV or movie sequences that the gamer is unable to control and the rest of the score is the looping gameplay music. The only two scores I haven't encountered this problem with are Giacchino's Medal of Honor: Frontline and Chris Tilton's Black. Those two are both very fluid works on album.
