The cable channel TCM recently showed a bunch of Japanese animated movies, which is the first time I've seen any. I wonder what you guys think of them - and of course the scores.Princess Mononoke was interesting. I rather enjoyed it despite the complete lack of emotional resonance. The score has an appealing "big" theme.
Spirited Away is the best I've seen. Not just pretty pictures, but an engrossing story.
Some others...
Porco Rosso: Pleasant light entertainment. Some humor.
My Neighbor Totoro: Quality kid's movie.posted 02-27-2006 02:41 AM PT (US)

What I love about the Miyazaki films is that they are so UNLIKE Hollywood. Gone are the song and dance routines a la Disney, and he's never afraid to just let time pass by without anything major happening (the bus waiting scene in MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO, for example). Just to be engrossed in the mood (especially when it's raining, which it always does in his movies).I'm sure there has been plenty of discussion about these films and scores before (at least it has over at FSM), but it's only lately that I've truly come to appreciate them. KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE, MONONOKE, SPIRITED AWAY, TOTORO, NAUSICAA AND THE VALLEY OF THE WIND etc.

Kenji Kawai's Innocence: Ghost in the Shell 2 is a powerful score. Taikos never sounded so good...

In addition to those already mentioned, check out "Metropolis" (very cool) & the soon to be released on DVD "Howl's Moving Castle" (should be good).
