I can't believe that JNH got snubbed again. King Kong was probably the best score of the year.

So it begs the question.... have the two J Williams nominations essentially cancelled his chances for Oscar?Hopefully voting members will see how much more Geisha is than Munich.
But then again, way to go Marianelli! That would be a satisfactory win for me.
Same with Constant Gardnerer, although I fear an Oscar win would really get in the way of Iglesias' creative juices if that happened. I like where is output has been coming from. Just a thought.
Will the Europeans win again, or will John Williams rescue American composers with an Asian or Islamic subject!?! Fantastic.

Williams 'Geisha' score is gorgeous and definitely worth a nomination. But if he was going to be nominated for two scores I'd choose EpIII over 'Munich.'However, it is a cry'n shame that JNH's 'King Kong' was snubbed. Oh, well. I won't be watching the show anyway.

The poll is up on this site....
http://www.moviemusic.com/vote/polls.aspLet's see how this goes!
How do you think the general populous will vote, and how do you think the ACAD will vote?

Kong wasn't worthy of being nominated. It feels too rushed and has that been there done that before feeling from JNH.

I find Kong quite amazing, both in the film and on CD. As for the Williams scores, I'd have nominated WOTW.NP: Memoirs of a Geisha

Great to see Iglesias among the nominated... I would not have thought it was realistic to hope for that. It was not one of my top five scores of the year, but of the top 5 (Beautiful Country, Fateless, 2046, Memoirs, Birth - a last year score) only Memoirs really had a chance. As for two Williams scores... they both deserve it... Memoirs is the best win to hope for here.
Only the Marianelli and Santaolalla raise questions for me. Marianelli feels a little cute... too something... nice, maybe. But that's the film in a nutshell.
Santaolalla's score is weak music, however strong it is in the film. Consequently it's hard to accept that winning, though this is the academy that has awarded some shockers over great ones in the past.

Regarding the songs, I am stumped as to why there are only three nominated. I thought there were something like 40 songs eligible. My super crazy wild conspiracy theory is this: the three nominated songs got more than one vote, while all the others tied for fourth place with 1 vote each, and fifth place with 0 votes each. Wacky! And then later I noticed the song nominated from Crash by Bird York isn't the one on the Crash CD... but one from two or three years ago. That is so weird.

If history repeats itself, Williams would win for Memoirs (as happened when ET won a Golden Globe & an Oscar). It was also among the most anticipated scores of the year by many in the industry and fellow composers.Munich is another masterpiece closer to the Schindler's List side of things. The film is just not receiving as much attention as many thought it would with its slow roll out.
Like the Marianelli (and predicted here that it would be a possible nominee....)it's got a lot of stuff like "Finding Neverland"'s score and is an amazing piece of music that perfectly captures the essence of the film.
Have not had a chance to hear Brokeback Mountain. It is interesting that none of the songs from the film were selected. It has a chance based on the history of block voting for films, but I don't believe that will happen this time.
It's great that Iglesias received a nomination this year. It's an odd choice that I had thought would have been a Desplat score...maybe next year.

'In The Deep' by Bird York is one of 2 songs at the end of the score CD, or at least the version I have.

You are right. I didn't realize or just plain forgot about that and automatically assumed the song would be on the song soundtrack!Still interested in finding out how/why a song included on York's 2003 CD "Velvet Hour" is eligible for an Oscar two years later....

My wild conspiracy theory about why only three songs were nominated has been shot down in a blaze of glory:
http://www.oscars.org/78academyawards/rules/rule16.html
"Nominations will be determined by an averaged point system of voting using 10, 9.5, 9, 8.5, 8, 7.5, 7, 6.5 or 6. Only those songs receiving an average score of 8.25 or more shall be eligible for nomination. There may not be more than five nor fewer than three nominations."[Message edited by PeterK on 02-01-2006]

I am really angry at the nominations. I felt that the best score of 2005 was Goblet of Fire, second was Episode III, third was Narnia. I know I know, a lot of people disagree with me here, but that is just how I feel. It is a shame that Gardener and Brokeback were nominated for score. Does the Academy even have ears? I mean, they work well in the film, but a great film score should do more than just complement the picture. It should enhance it. The ones I mentioned above are the best of the year. Runners up are JNH for King Kong and Batman Begins, Memoirs of a Geisha, The New World.

I'm sorry...I am tired of seeing John Williams nominated every @#*DAM year...and twice in one year to boot.I agree with the sentiments that King Kong should have been there...its synergy with the film was fantastic.
No worries...Johnny's epic number of nominations will never be toppled, but enough is enough. There are other deserving scores and composers who deserved that fifth spot.
Bring on the wrath of the Circle of Williams disciples...I have had a crap day at work and I don't care.

Wouldn't it be great though if Williams' brilliant immersion in Asian musical aesthetics took Brokeback instead?

John Williams has written much better music than most other composers, he more than deserves the nominations and in fact he should have won at least for A.I. in the last couple of years (which was the superior score to what actually won that year)
