Which is better? on album? I have only the expanded Die Hard album that was released a while back. It's an interesting mix between background underscore and action music. Does the subsequent Die Hard 2 and 3 ups the action content?

I'd say the Die Hard is the best of the bunch, action-wise. There's an exciting piece on Die Harder called "Ice Pick," I believe, and its pretty fun with the action material; that cue is sort of a reprise of music heard in Die Hard. Actually, aside from the original, much of the action music heard in Die Harder and Die Hard With A Vengeance is just a re-cap of what's in Die Hard. The biggest omission from those scores has to be with the Die Hard With A Vengeance soundtrack: its missing the biggest and best cue from the film, the wicked Michael Kamen version of "Johnny Comes Marching ..." or "Johnny Goes Marching ..." (I can't remember what the exact title is). It's best heard in the end credits for that film, so I'm sure it'd be easy enough to isolate and rip. Fun stuff! Die Hard obviously has the very best release of the bunch from Varése.

    Thanks Sean for your reply

I do remember the reworking of "Johnny comes/goes Marchin Home" (clarify, anyone?)in DH3 as being one of the most significant contribution to the film. Shame that it's not on the album. I heard that in DH2, Kamen had to work around a concert piece by some Finland composer? Sibelius? Can anyone clarify?

The thematic consistency with the Die Hard scores is that they're all written building up to some classical piece of music as a climactic moment. In Die Hard, Beethoven's 9th symphony/"Ode to Joy" was the key piece.

In Die Hard 2, the piece was Sibelius' "Finlandia" (director Renny Harlin is from Finland, and usually put some Finland tribute in his films, whether a flag, or in this case, a piece of music.)

In Die Hard 3 there are actually 2 pieces, "The Iron Foundry" by Alexi Mosolov, and the "Johnny Comes Marching Home" (which is not a traditional classic piece, per se, but the way it's arranged here, it should be.)

The Finlandia recording in DH2 is by far the worst performance of that piece you're every likely to encounter.
