Once the year was over I set about making this compilation. I set myself a few rules to begin with:

    • The CD has to be aimed primarily at non-collectors, so that I can make copies for friends and family and maybe get them interested.
    • Therefore - box office hits take precendence.
    • Also - tracks that are easy on the ear also take precedence. Especially thematic stuff people might recognise from the film.
    • One track per film (so I made suites)
    • Where possible, shorter tracks so as to represent as many films as possible.
    • Only films and scores released in 2005 (in the US).
    • Local flavour - films that made a splash here in Malta take precedence, as well as films I know my friends and family watched.

    _______________________________________

    The End Result:

    01. King Kong - Suite* - James Newton Howard (5:36)
    02. Brokeback Mountain - The Wings - Gustavo Santaolalla (1:52)
    03. Revenge of the Sith - Battle of the Heroes - John Williams (3:42)
    04. Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit - A Grand Day Out - Julian Nott (1:54)
    05. Batman Begins - Suite* - James Newton Howard (6:55)
    06. Crash - Flames (edit)* - Mark Isham (5:52)
    07. Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire - Harry in Winter - Patrick Doyle (2:56)
    08. Mr. & Mrs. Smith - Minivan Chase - John Powell (2:12)
    09. Memoirs of a Geisha - Becoming a Geisha - John Williams (4:52)
    10. Sin City - Sin City - Robert Rodriguez (1:55)
    11. Cinderella Man - Cinderella Man (edit)* - Thomas Newman (2:32)
    12. Hostage - Hostage - Alexandre Desplat (2:52)
    13. Kingdom of Heaven - Ibelin - Harry Gregson-Williams (2:05)
    14. A History of Violence - Run - Howard Shore (2:25)
    15. Serenity - Serenity - David Newman (0:54)
    16. Lord of War - Warlord - Antonio Pinto (3:09)
    17. Sahara - Hold Tight! - Clint Mansell (3:18)
    18. Munich - End Credits - John Williams (4:06)
    19. Nanny McPhee - Snow in August (edit)* - Patrick Doyle (5:09)
    20. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Planet Factory Floor - Joby Talbot (2:29)
    21. The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe - The Battle - Harry Gregson-Williams (7:08)
    22. Corpse Bride - End Credits Part 1 - Danny Elfman (1:50)
    23. The Brothers Grimm - And They Lived Happily Ever After - Dario Marianelli (3:40)

    [Total Time: 79:32]

*The suites were done to give a better representation of the themes in the film. The edits were done to allow more tracks onto the CD.
I'm quite pleased with the results, if I may say so myself
King Kong - Track 1 'King Kong' - ending mixes into 3:44 of 'Tooth and Claw'.
Then at 5:13 mixes into 2:16 of 'BKTB V'. Then the ending mixes into 3:14 of 'Central Park'
    'Flames' - removed first 2:06
'Snow in August' - removed first 1:49
Batman - The beginning of 'Macrotus' which then at 2:06 mixes into 'Molossus'
'Cinderella Man' - Quick fade out at 2:32

    Tracks I reluctantly left out:
Charlie & The Chocolate Factory - Main Titles - a bit too insane, plus a bit too long (and hard to cut short).
Chicken Little - The Sky is Falling - the film was pratically unheard of here in Malta.
March of the Penguins - The March
Racing Stripes - The Big Race - hard to cut down, plus same problem as Chicken Little
The Chumscrubber - Diggin Montage - Not even released here.
War of the Worlds - The Ferry Scene - not exactly easy listening
Revenge of the Sith - Anakin's Betrayal - the suite would have been too long

I only wish I had the time! Way cool playlists.... I like to see the thought processes going into these, as well as the mix details that make up the suites in those particular tracks.

Every year I make a set of CDs for my girlfriend based on the best scores I've heard that year... this year I'm trying to limit it to 6 CDs! (Some scores really benefit from having 3-4 tracks included - communicate the musical narrative, etc.)

This thread has given me some inspiration, hehe. I've started making my own "Best Of Movie Music" compilation set. All though I'm not limiting it to 2005 but doing it for most of my scores that I have. So far I've only done 2 discs but I'll post a listing when I'm done with it.

I considered doing this same thing before Christmas so I could present my family members with a nice little gift; but time was not so kind to me. But the start of this thread has renewed my interest. Look out soon for my tracklist!

I can't believe I missed this when compiling my CD - that's a great track... Probably becuase I didn't even consider Madagascar, since I remembered it as just song renditions and pieces from Barry and Vangelis.
