Hello everyone,I'm interested in whether everyone can think hard about DVD featurettes you might have seen that give a really strong insight into the process of scoring, the dialogue between composer/director, etc.
E.g.
DOOR IN THE FLOOR - all crew dept heads, including the composer Marcelo Zarvos, discuss what they were trying to achieve in a certain scene in the film.
DEMONLOVER - 30 minutes of recording session footage with Oliver Assayas and Sonic Youth.
WAR OF THE WORLD, MINORITY REPORT - those short featurettes where Williams talks about what he's trying to achieve with the music. These are a bit light-on alas.Any really strong ones come to mind? I'm trying to look into them before I next teach a class on film music.

The only ones I've ever scene never reached much depth, but at least were visible to those interested. Silvestri's done several short ones, I think. Can't remember exat titles... Tomb Raider 2 maybe? Is there a site that indexes film music "extras" on DVDs? That would be cool.

Hi franz,I believe I can think of a few more, but for now add AI to the John William's featurettes. It's a fairly good one (as I remember), due to the rich mix of story environments within the movie.
I will checkout the 2nd Matrix DVD to see if Don Davis (I think that's who scored it) has some comments (seem to remember he did).
Cheers, -Greg-

Girl With A Pearl Earring DVD : includes an excellent documentary explaining the entire construction of the banquet scene (every aspect), complete with composer commentary.

I'd like to put in a nod towards the DVD premium that goes with the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe Special Edition soundtrack....going the extra few dollars to pick up the Special Edition is a little hard-core, but I think the featurette makes the effort worth it.

There are quite a few audio commentaries/Isolated scores by composers on various DVDs of course..Goldsmith talking on the "Hollow Man" DVD springs to mind and Danny Elfman on "Planet of the Apes". "The Village" and "Jeepers Creepers 2" have some nice score featurettes too.

When I saw Jerry's name mentioned I recalled how 'Star Trek : First Contact' has CD ROM extras on it with an interview with him, and I believe his son. Will need to pop that into the player... and listen to Main Title/Locutus.

Black Hawk Down (the 3 disc DVD) has a great featurette on the score, almost 30mins, I believe; Hannibal and Gladiator, also by Ridley Scott with Hans Zimmer on score duties, have very well done score docos. Also, The Missing has nice one with James Horner and Ron Howard, discussing the music and their collaborations—fascinating stuff. Star Trek: The Motion Picture has some really great interviews with Jerry Goldsmith, and he's featured on the film's audio commentary track.NP: The New World - James Horner *****/*****

It sucks that the first Back To The Future movie didn't have a remastered isolated score with commentary from Silvestri. I remember that at first it was going to have that with the new DVD set but then was pulled at the last moment. I don't know why they pulled it.

Franz, apart from the really obvious ones which are stated on the box ("Interview with..."), I was very pleasantly surprised to see the good and great John Morgan and William Stromberg discuss, albeit briefly, the score to THE WOLF MAN on the DVD which was released a few years ago to coincide with VAN HELSING. Their love of old, hitherto ignored, scores for old horrors comes over loud and clear.

It's a class at the Sydney Film School on sound in film. It's meant to go for 3 hours. I'm trying to get them to give me permission to make a day of it and really go over some involved examples.

BTW, the Extended Edition of Peter Jackson's LotR have some amazing docs on Howard Shore's scores and the last edition was packed (well, if you got the version that includes WETA Workshop's miniature Minas Tirith) with a seperate DVD devoted entirely to the scores. Does anyone here have that set?
I'm gonna look through my DVDs tonight and see if I can't come up with some with DVDs that include stand-out featurettes on their scores.
