There are still many scores by Newman in the past, still not recorded, which are quite good. Among them Ten Gentlemen from West Point, Vigil in Night and the very underrated Moontide. These all from same period, 1940-1943 during one of his most prolific periods. Vigil, a nurses film, features a great march. The West Point film has lots of good action music in it and the Moontide from 1942, a tearjerker with Ida Lupino, has a very good score with an excellent action piece near the end.Another good one from same time period is Life Begins at 830, which incorporates various popular songs at the time but also has lots of good original score in there.

We've been lucky to have a few Newman scores from this period survive on acetate so that CDs of Son of Fury, My Friend Flicka, Wilson, etc. have seen the light of day either legitimately or as bootlegs. It's difficult to say if the scores John mentions still exist in original versions. John mentions Moontide. Some of this film was directed by Fritz Lang before he walked from it. Another Lang film from the same period, Manhunt, has a score by Newman I'm very fond of. Do acetates or sheet music for these exist? Will anyone ever pony up the funds to re-record them someday? We'll just have to see.

Thought you might be referring to those catchy classic themes from "The Man With One Red Shoe" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash" by Thomas Newman...ah well.

Lou, you are right on the acetates. Most of these dont exist, however the music transcripts and notes(including the conductor notes and orchestrations) done by Newman are in the USC Library from 1940 on with Vigil in the Night. Almost every score from there on to 1970 is there. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the over 100 plus before that are not there. J.

Look kids, we know all about Thomas, David, and Randy Newman, but as good as they can be they don't hold a candle to the old man (or Uncle Al).
