Ok, so if Limited Edition Super Bowl I started this month, who would be in the playoffs? In other words, which is your favorite limited edition of all those hundreds that have been released?

LOTR complete doesn't qualify, as I'm pretty certain it's not a limited edition (correct me if I am wrong on that one!). Varese's JG Box set is pretty awesome, but even it has shortcomings.

For everyone who absolutely must have every single limited edition, gauge which is Super Bowl bound by letting us know which one you've played the most.

I have to think hard about which one would be my Super Bowl champ... perhaps a Delerue, maybe a Goldsmith or even a particular FSM Williams CD. Percepto's fat little booklets make them at least wildcard contenders....

No question about it, Capricorn One.

    Now just a sec.

I know you have basically dismissed the JG at Fox Box, but...

Have the little hamsters in your head fallen off the treadmill?

ANY shortcomings it has are eclipsed by it's awesomeness!

From every viewpoint it is a clear winner.

Musically it's SIX discs of Goldsmith, not a measly one disc like CapOne. It covers a huge stretch of his career. Even if it was a comp of released stuff it would be pretty awesome, but it has three discs of scores that aren't available anywhere else. Damnation Alley, baby!

As a collectible it is more limited and more highly sought after by JG fans.

The booklet might have binding defects but it is chock full of great info.

There we go! I was hoping someone might nibble the bait. Everything has shortcomings, so this discussion is which limited edition has the most... longcomings!?

JG Box would destroy most foes, so perhaps we should keep the teams to 1 and 2 CD limited edition releases?

Let's get this thread rolling.... there's a lot to dissect here.

    Shall I nominate a contender?

Does "The Towering Inferno" sound like a Limited Edition Super Bowl champ? Could it have been any better a release, besides being limited to 10,000 copies?

Well, if we exclude JG at Fox Box, the race gets a little broader. Here’s a list of scores that I think are worthy of contention based on the score, the presentation and collectibilty. I don’t put as much weight on SOLD OUT as some might. Does anyone really think that Sheena is a better release than Mutiny on the Bounty?

Here are my contenders (in no particular order):

Capricorn One - Hey, it’s great, just not better than the Fox Box

Vic Muzzy: Suites and Themes - A sampler of his best stuff and for many, a little goes a long way. Plus the night walker main titles aren’t flawed like it is on the single disc release. Also one of the first Muzzy’s to be discontinued.

Towering Inferno - Better score than Poseidon Adventure and a key disaster pic. Sold out.

Logan’s Run - This might have been the best loved and remembered SF flick of the 70’s if it hadn’t been for a little film called Star Wars

Omega Man – I don’t completely understand why this score is so highly sought after, but it is. Sold out its print run in record time for a FSM 3000 pressing.

Mutiny on the Bounty – I know, it’s three discs. But when it’s this good how can you begrudge it an extra disc? A landmark release.

Time Machine – Great score and quite a surprise as we had been told many times that the masters were not available.

The Tower - Alright, maybe not his best work, but it terms of collectibilty it’s aces. You get the Core as a free gift. A very limited run.

Young Sherlock Holmes – A promo that was certainly sold like a limited edition. Great music. Should get a wider release.

Predator- A score that was highly sought after and still is. A holy grail for many collectors for years and probably the key Silvestri score after Back to the Future.

ALTERNATE: If Young Sherlock Holmes gets scrubbed for being a Promo, I would add Bandolero! Sold out quickly and it’s a Goldsmith western.

There’s lots more great limiteds like The Robe, The Fury, Sand Peebles, Great Escape, Hawaii, Knight Rider, Poseidon Adventure, Barbarian and the Geisha, The Egyptian, Patton and many others. I also excluded the early 90’s Varese Club releases because most people don’t own them. But Cherry 2000, Flesh + Blood, The ‘Burbs, Raggedy Man and Vibes would certainly be contenders.
