Okay, I just picked this up today (along with King Kong and The Howling) and on it's first listen, I'm very much liking it. It seems to me that Sean wasn't keeping an ear for the haunting score that Desplat has crafted on his earlier post in which he advised me against buying it. Thankfully someone else stepped in (a fellow Desplat fan ) and told me not to worry and that the score was well worth it. Let me give it a few more listens before I give you any in-depth analysis of what I got from the score. But in any case, Desplat is easily one of the most remarkable talents we have currently enjoying a bit of fame on the score fan trail.

On first listen, anyone who really dug Hostage or Birth is going to find themselves pleased again.

So far I've liked what I've heard of the CD. Certainly low-key (and here comes the timp from BIRTH!), but certainly not as bland as TRAFFIC. Who made that comparison? Fools!

Agreed, that is a silly comment. I actually just bought Traffic recently and have quickly become tired of it; and I already have that Brian Eno ethereal bliss on a much better OST, 28 Days Later. I think the beauty of this score is the fact that's it is low key; it works to a great effect. So far, my fav tracks have to be "I'll Walk Around" and "Mirage". The percussion work in "Walk" is so brilliantly subdued that it makes it all the more effective.

Alexandre Desplat's SYRIANA is definitely one of the ten best scores this year, IMHO. It's subdued and very ethereal in its presentation. A most excellent listening experience. Even though it's on my top ten list, it doesn't surpass the BEST SCORE of the year - Alexandre Desplat's HOSTAGE.

I must have Desplat on the membrane. Yuk Yuk.

    ALEXANDRE DESPLAT RULES!

Wow, I didn't think anyone else would have HOSTAGE in their top ten. It's actually in my top five!

The comparison with Traffic is far from foolish, and I was somewhat disappointed with Syriana.

But Hostage is certainly in my top ten of the year (and maybe top five).
