    Syriana
    King Kong
    Brokeback Mountain
    Chronicles of Narnia
    Memoirs of a Geisha

I don't know how representative the CD release is, but there's only 13 minutes of original score for Brokeback Mountain. Admittedly the last 2 minutes are sublime, but it's still mostly low-key 'sonic wallpaper'.

More than likely; judging the foreign press' reaction to the film at multiple festivals and end-of-the-year critics awards, I smell a big sweep for Brokeback Mountain.

If they asked me right now (having not yet heard Kong - in full form - or Syriana) I would choose Chronicles of Narnia.

HPFA is obviously showing a weakness in their organization with these nominations..... or perhaps this year truly was lackluster for original movie music? Nah, I can think of five good scores from this year. HPFA loses cred this year in my book (they have been losing a little more and more each year ever since they found themselves to be such an "important influence" on the Oscar race).

I agree. I looked at the nominees, and its showing a snobbish attitude toward all film; as if the only good films are released this season or rushed through any phase of production just to get consideration.

My humble opinion: they're ignoring some gems: Doyle's Goblet of Fire, Elfman's Corpse Bride, Zimmer and Howard on Batman Begins, Ottman's Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang. Of course, I'm biased on these, but I see no reason they should be taken any less seriously than those nominated. I would include Revenge of the Sith and War of The Worlds as well - I would still like to hear Memoirs of A Geisha.

For me now, the Golden Globes and subsequent Oscar race (other than Sci-Tech portions of it) are meaningless. I enjoyed what I heard from this year, and bottom line, I'm going to care more about them than Brokeback Mountain. There's nothing about that film that interests me. If I want a western, or any film about "cowboys", give me Silverado. I WANT TO MAKE CLEAR THAT I THINK BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, WHILE I AM NOT INTERESTED IN SEEING IT, HAS EVERY RIGHT TO EXIST IN OUR CULTURE AND HAS EVERY RIGHT TO BE SEEN IF SOMEONE SO WISHES. I say that "boldly" because of its subject matter and friends of mine who are sensitive to its material.

Now I haven't heard King Kong yet, since I just bought it and won't hear as represented on the disc until after I see the movie tomorrow night- I'm listening to Narnia right now and have seen that film- I like Gregson-Williams work very much, but I've a feeling it won't court the popular vote with the Foriegn Press Association.

I just noticed that all of these nominees were released THIS MONTH! When the hell did the HPFA swith to one-month years?

Widescreen, I agree with you again on some of your choices (except Batman Begins, not exactly sterling examples from either compser, but still good music for a great film). I'd also like to add Williams' War of the Worlds and Marianelli's The Brother's Grimm.

What's more uncommon with this list is that it is one of the shorter ones. However, many of the critically acclaimed biopics this year do not have newly composed scores so that may have something to do with it.

Out of the list, it would be nice to see Desplat win. I have only heard Memoirs (on disc), and Chronicles (on film) so can't make a critical decision yet, but I really did not think Chronicles was that great a score...it seems like it is the "Zimmer" replacement score.

These choices are also made to garner more talk and publicity for the broadcast..."Who will show up?" kind of thing.

I love the fact that my Top 5 list for the last thirty years is always at odds with these award shows. Especially the Oscars. Most of the time, these nominations are a joke. Ha Ha pathetic.
