We're near to the end of the year, and maybe it's the right time to discuss the TOP5 scores of 2005.

    My votes would go to:

    1.Batman Begins
    2.Kingdom Of Heaven
    3.Charlie and The Chocolate Factory
    4.Chronicles Of Narnia
    5.SW:Revenge Of The Sith

(i did not rank in order)

The best release is undisputedly FOTR complete.

    Revenge of the Sith
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
    The Brothers Grimm
    Wallace and Gromit
    Hostage / Charlie

(haven't heard King Kong yet, of course)

    Reserving judgement yet for:

    Jarhead
    King Kong
    Chronicles of Narnia
    Munich
    Syriana

    Only 5?!!!

    In no order:

    Crash
    Hostage
    Kingdom of Heaven
    Memoirs of a Geisha
    Pride and Prejudice

    ...........

And I'd agree the others so far listed are in my "extended" list as is the score for "Dust to Glory" by Nathan Furst; and George Fenton's "Valiant". Shore's "A History of Violence" is also pretty good as well.

    Kingdom Of Heaven
    Memoirs Of A Geisha
    Munich (presumably)
    Revenge Of The Sith
    King Kong (barely)

Goblet Of Fire isn't even within the Top 10.

AHH! It's too early John! We still have Narnia, Kong, Syriana, and Munich hot on our heels.

    But . . . what the hell:

    1. MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA
    2. WAR OF THE WORLDS
    3. THE BROTHERS GRIMM
    4. HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE
    5. STAR WARS EPISODE III: REVENGE OF THE SITH

(I hate top # lists, but in the spirit of one of my favorite Nick Hornby novels, here goes.)
    ======================================

    5. Batman Begins - Hans Zimmer and James Newton-Howard. One of the "it's about time" team ups. Served an excellent score for one of the years more compelling surprises to a franchise that seemed otherwise dead.

    4. Kameo: Elements of Power - Steve Burke. A game score, but high quality composition. Never played the game, but listening to the music, I'm not sure I need to. The music's a great ride in itself.

    3. Sahara - Clint Mansell. Adventurous with attitude. A great Bond score for a non-Bond movie.

    2. Revenge of the Sith - John Williams. Also eagerly anticipated. Twilight of the Jedi epic. A masterful full-circle close to a long beloved series.

    1. Serenity - David Newman. Most eagerly anticipated. Biggest jilt to the genre. Played most constantly in my car than any score this year. An excellent companion to Greg Edmonson's Firefly (a 2005 release, at least, though not a 2005 score, in truth.)

Those are good picks, Lancelot. I still can't believe how good the music is for Kameo...

I see Hostage on several people's lists and it rightly belongs on there. Desplat continues to amaze me with his scores. I'm really looking forward to Syriana.

I would also include The Machinist by Roque Banos.

Sahara is a tremendous amount of fun. That opening cue is fantastic and really gets the blood pumping.

I really enjoyed Crash. The score was another pleasant throwback to the kinds of scores Mark Isham wrote back in the 80's, like The Beast and The Hitcher.

Hostage got the number six spot on my list; but John had to make this a "Top 5" list so none of you would have known that.

How about a "Top Five Releases" list? This can include TV and game soundtracks, re-releases, etc.

    5. THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY: A CENTURY OF FLIGHT Varese set - Various Composers
    4. STARGATE: ATLANTIS - Joel Goldsmith
    3. THE RING/THE RING TWO - Hans Zimmer, Martin Tillman, Henning Lohner
    2. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: SEASON ONE - Bear McCreary and Richard Gibbs
    1. THE FLY/THE FLY II Varese set - Howard Shore/Christopher Young

    NP> Young's The Fly II ****/****

    1. The Brothers Grimm (Marianelli)
    2. The Corpse Bride (Elfman)
    3. 2046 (Umebayashi)
    4. Where the Truth Lies (Danna)
    5. Hide and Seek (Ottman)
    6. Hostage (Desplat)

The big one I'm waiting for is "Casanova" by Desplat.

BMikeJ, I count "The Machinist" as 2004, or else that would easily top the list.

    Dylan

    NP: Obra Maestra (Roque Banos)

Do you really think so? I'm quite a Young fan and I don't think it was his strongest contribution to the genre (i.e. Hellraiser or The Fly II) but it definitely had some unsettling atonal material and those trademark Young "sound masses" add a great touch of eerie otherworld-liness. But all in all, it lacked thematic material until those final two tracks. Young writes fantastic themes, but Emily Rose lacked.

LOL! That's good Sean, good laugh. But shouldn't it read, "Journey to the Ice"? That's what I get from my pseudo-Latin to Media Ventures dictionary.

I really like this atonal stuff, so I don´t need "nice" melodys to enjoy a score. "Emily.." is uncompromisíng dark with great soundscapes, very fascinating! It just takes a littel time to get under the skin of this one, but it´s pure delight!

    Michael

PS: The Machinist was missing in my top five list!
