Well, this might be the final nail in the coffin for this thread, but I'd just like to bring up something Lou said. It's true that film music isn't classical music (though it can be....zzzzzzz), but it most certainly is not jazz, at least where re-recordings are concerned. I agree that it would be futile to try to recreate the sound of Louis Armstrong singing or playing the trumpet (even IF we dowsed the sound in authentic 30s snap, crackle and pop - now THERE'S an interesting way to re-record!), and it would probably be horrendous to have a re-recording of something hugely great like Jerry Fielding's THE GAUNTLET (unless it were a "re-imagining" or whatever it could be called), because the players are so integral to that kind of score. But the orchestral scores which are generally re-recorded are neither jazz nor pure classical, but because they tend to lean towards the latter, the results have a better chance of being acceptable (even if they rarely are). There's no point in trying to do Louis Armstrong without Louis Armstrong - that's for stand-up comics, but doing Hans Salter is certainly legitimate in the hands of MMM.

Yes, Graham that Gauntlet would be great, but the orchestra might have real trouble playing some of it. Just like some of Rozsa's great fast and rapid playing scores. like Jungle Book and some others. It has some very difficult passages in it. That Gauntlet is one I would like to see too. One of my favs by him. I also like that Advise and Consent score. Very nice. I also like that score to that really gross western; Wild Bunch. Great score. J.
