Just bought the new Harry Potter soundtrack here in Switzerland. Great score. A lot darker than the previous ones. Patrick Doyle did a great job on this one. It has this grand feel to it.

Regarding the cover. I remember a thread where a few of us were complaining about the cover art. Well, the one I bought has a different cover than the one I saw on Amazon. Check out the picture on the left hand side of the official soundtrack website (http://www.harrypottersoundtrack.com). That's how my cover looks like.

Most "reviews" at Amazon are generally terrible most of the time for anything...I pay no attention to them. Half of them are so idiotic they're laughable.

Good review Brian; I picked up the disc this evening and I am giving it it's run on my laptop as I'm typing this. I'm currently on track 6, "The Goblet of Fire". What I've heard so far, as you pointed out in your review, is that this is totally original stuff and I have only noticed brief flourishes of Williams' "Hedwig Theme"; the first tracks use of it is outstanding as it draws it out a bit longer and doesn't leave it light and fluttery like I felt Williams' orchestration did (especially in The Sorceror's Stone. Having read Peter's earlier thread, I am eagerly anticipating "Golden Egg".

Have had this CD in my car for a few days now, and saw the film last Friday too.

    • Love the opening track
    • I disagree with reviews such as that at Filmtracks which are outraged at how Doyle discarded all the themes except 3 statements of Hedwig's theme. I think Hedwig's theme is enough to give a sense of continuity, and the film series isn't going to suffer in the least if some tiny Quidditch theme or the original Voldemort theme isn't included.
    • There are so many standout tracks on this album it's quite impressive - World Cup, Harry in Winter, Golden Egg, Death of Cedric, etc.
    • The main cue I noticed during the film was Neville's Waltz, which fit that montage like a glove and really liften the scene. Cedric's death was also great.
    • I like the new 'Harry' theme (Harry in Winter), especially when it pops up in other cues
    • IMO, the highlight of the score, both on the CD and in the film, is the Priori Incantatum sequence at the end of the Voldemort track.
    • Pity about the crappy songs at the end
    • I hope Doyle gets to do Phoenix.

I think they did a sloppy job printing the booklet for the jewel case. The picture is too dark and I can't read what Mike Newell wrote about Patrick Doyle.

Other than that and the crappy 3 songs at the end the score isn't that bad, not as thematic as Williams but Doyle did a pretty good job in my opinion.

I noticed that too, Mark. Not only is the printing much too dark, but that font should only be used when giving us the sequel title for the Harry Potter films. If I didn't know any better, I could swear that track 10 - "Golden Egg" - actually says "Goiden Ecc".

There is some beautiful music here.....

I like to think "Harry in Winter" is what James Horner tried to do with his love theme for Titanic but just couuldn't get mused enough. You think girls cried to Horner's music... wow, the world's water shortage would be over if Doyle scored.

I will say it now. I want Patrick Doyle to score every movie from now on.

Here, here! Listened to Golden Egg for what may be the tenth time already, and it still gives me chills. Can't think of the last recent cue of film music that's had the same effect.

Man. I need to get this CD. I've been to Wal-Mart twice this week and they still don't have it. I guess I'll have to break down and make a special trip to another mall.

  • Oh God I hope not, this is a very mediocre score, there are a few good tracks, but the action sequences suffer because of the score. The best pieces of music are the 4 Williams references, and Doyle's music for the entrance into the Grand Hall by the newcomers

I must confess I wasn't very excited about this score either, after just hearing it on CD.

However, yesterday I saw the movie and the music works really well in it...

Does somebody else have the CD with this, in my humble opinion, superior cover?

I do. And it's a fine score. Clearly not the best Potter score, and clearly not the best Doyle score, but really enjoyable.

Somebody PLEASE give Harry Potter to Bruce Broughton. For the LOVE of God. Everyone please come to your senses. Warner Bros, wake up!

Pat did a great job, however.

Although I really like Patrick Doyle's score to HP4, I'd like to see John Powell get a shot at it.

I was very, very impressed with what I heard. I have to admit that I was a little concerned when I heard that John Williams wasn’t scoring this one. Not that I didn’t think that Patrick Doyle could write a great score, but I was worried that it would clash with the previous film scores. In many ways this score has a lighter, more magical touch
There are many fine moments on this disc, but I really like the Understated “Britshness” of the Hogwart’s March. "Myrtle’s Move" has a light, ethereal touch that underlies the ominous nature of the liltingly sang lyrics. There is plenty of heroic stuff, here but the odd little things really stand out. Not 1 but 2 waltzes!

“Foreign Visitors Arrive” adapts the Hogwarts Theme and it is wonderful as it segues into majestic fanfares that I would guess underscore the arrival of the competing schools. Very Wagnerian to my ears.

There is dark and brooding music in “The Dark Mark” and there is a slow build up to “Frank’s Death” as we go from a slow, almost hypnotic passage to a crescendo. It’s like you can almost hear a snake moving and striking.

Quidditch World Cup is incredible as well.
You start with a celtic style dance for Ireland that moves into a Blud and thunder piece for the opposing team. Just very well done.

There is a track called "Hogwart's Hymn" that a would guess is for the very end of the film.

There are so many joys and little treats in this score that it is probably my favorite score of the year so far. What a treat!

I think I'll start up a "Harry in Winter" fund so we can all pitch in and get Doyle to write an entire symphony based on this piece from Goblet of Fire. Dammit, this is fine!!

Is that your blurb on the front page, Peter?

If repeated listening is a gauge of satisfaction, then certainly Goblet is my favorite soundtrack of the year, so I couldn't agree more.

But is it a re-recording, or an edit job?

For instance the 'Quiddich World Cup' comprises the jig from the arena and the entrance of the Bulgarians at Hogwarths. 'The Golden Egg' is extensively edited in the film, and also seems to be absent the percussive compliment to the chorus of triangles that erupt as the dragon breaches the tarpaulin and chases Harry out of the arena.

There's a good deal of connective tissue heard in the film that didn't make it to disk. An expanded version would be welcome.

    Yes, my blurp!

I think what we have on CD are the cues as recorded in the studio. Music gets chopped up in the editing booth ex post facto all the time, so I will assume that's what happened with Doyle's music in all of those cases you mention.
