Posting with the thought that those more in the know might know....

If the score for "Images" can be remixed to play behind Robert Altman for the very recently produced "Imagining Images" "interview, what is keeping it from a CD release? Apart from the possibility that it is not commercially viable and too avante-garde for some?

    Isn't it owned by MGM?

Just random thoughts...not schizophrenic ones...as far as I know.

That's a good question. There is a boot out there so I would guess the tracks survive. Everything else he's done is pretty out there (except for few things like this) so if there was a way to get it out, somebody will.

Images along with Sugerland Express, Cindarella Liberty and Monsigner are all scores that we need from Mr. Williams.

I would also love a HOw to Steal a Million but I have heard that aprt from the main title, not much survives besides the album masters.

"How to Steal" is actually available in Europe in what must be a pressing from an album. The main title was on an Audrey Hepburn compilation here in the states. It would be good to see Varese do this with another Williams comedy score, similar to their pairing of "Fitzwilly" and "The Long Goodbye".

I have that pressing but it doesn't compare to the original tracks. The main title was on the "Music For Audrey Hepburn" CD and it was so great. The Tsunami CD was really a let down.

Images is a very provocative and interesting score. I certainly think it is one of Williams' best, and the integration of the weird Stomu Yamash'ta sounds is brilliant in context.

This would be a most welcome release.

NOTE: The b**tl*g CD is sourced from a b**tl*g LP produced not long after the film's release, so that is no guarantee that the original tracks have survived.

I can't imagine that the MGM interview used a bootleg source.

Also, I thought that the music from "The Changeling"--a 1979 (?) haunted house movie, and great score--had a couple of thematic threads that seemed to be very similar in "Images". Anyone know if Ken Wannberg worked on "Images"?

    How remixed was it?

Are you sure it wasn't just from the opening or closing titles?

It seemed like it played pretty much through the interview so I don't think it was the same 3 minute loop or something like that.

    Hmmm... was it in stereo?

If the original tracks are still around and in good shape, I don't know whether or not the film is well-known enough to get a CD release. Although, it is a Williams score, so...

Hard to say...it "registered" as in stereo but I could not say.

This would be a score which would make for an interesting study in orchestration of these techniques as well as to hear it. Altman says he has a copy of it framed and hanging on a wall.

Hey, if I had a score for one of my films that was this cool, I'd have it framed and hanging on a wall too. This may be the single most powerful score for any Altman film. It certainly is the one that does the most to tell the story (with the possible exception of Popeye, of course, but that's a musical).

As someone told me (and please don't take this as gospel since there are so many rumors in fandom and this could easily be one), there was originally going to be an Images LP. And that LP was mastered. When the film bombed, the LP was cancelled. However, the bootleg LP that surfaced later was supposedly taken from a copy of the LP's test pressing. I don't know about the original tapes one way or the other.

Oh, there is PLENTY of Williams material that is unreleased. Just take a brief look at my want list at http://www.celluloidtunes.com/cdwantlist-williams.htm
