WOW! This thread has been here for a few days without any reply; sorry Demetris. Anyways, someone brought this to my attention and I was able to listen to all of the tracks earlier at work and I am quite fond of what Williams and his cello and violin contributionists have done for this. From the minute "Sayuri's Theme" starts, you are in Yo-Yo Ma heaven; you can definitely sense thier previous works within this music. Up until track 8 we get a good mix of what Williams can do with Asian music and there are some particularly outstanding percussion beats. What track 8 has in store for us is a wonderful theme played upon Izthak Perlman; whom I had only heard of previously on Tan Dun's score for Hero. There is a lot of really great Williams-esque music; meaning that you won't know that it isn't him behind those notes and that baton. It's also a good treat to hear the amount of different instruments that are used, from the timpany to the harp as well as many different drums; ranging from taiko to koto. But, all of this can be found in Dan's brief discriptions of the tracks which he did very well. I'm just bringing this post back to the top in hopes that both Demetris doesn't feel left out and the rest of us remember that this score is coming out. It's on my list.

Marian, the credit on the CD album says so.Nuts, so you've never heard of Schindler's List? It might have won an Oscar, and Perlman might have performed some of it...

This score is Seven Years in Tibet's introverted little Asian sister.

P.S. Koto is not a percussion instrument!

Dammit PK, you're on my case tonight! I was under the assumption that a koto was a Japanese drum similar to a taiko drum; but I guess I was mistaken, my bad. As for Schindler's List, I haven't heard it seperated from the film (which I haven't seen in at least fours years) so I hadn't heard Perlman's solos in that score. I was only previously aware of his work with Tan Dun in Hero, as I pointed out.

Nothin' personal, Mr. Nutz!Once you've heard/see Schindler's again, you may end up thinking more of Perlman than Williams after reflection. I do.

I have yet to pick up the OST but I did see the film. There are a few asian-sounding cues that use the shakuhachi flute that seem pretty generic. But other cues were more impressive. The end credits/end titles music stands out. And while the score is pretty enough, is every Williams score from now on going to have Ma and Perlman solos in it? This is getting worse than Elmer using the Ondes Martinot every chance he could. I'm surprised they didn't show up for War of the Worlds.
The film itself is very pretty to look at (and has 3 great asian actresses in it) but the story is ultimately superficial. It's basically a simple chick flick posing as a period epic. I don't know if the fault is in the original novel, the script, or the direction, but despite a glossy surface the thing has no weight or depth.
