. . . because I just did while replying to that whole Zimmerito mess involving Shore's "soul-less" LOTR scores. Man, I miss Elliot so much and IMDb lists his next project as and untitled Neil Jordan thriller; which sounds promising since Goldenthal always delivers for Jordan's films. It really has been two LONG years since SWAT and the man might become our next Morricone/Poledouris. Did his Oscar win not help anything at all? Just a rant . . .NP: Goldenthal's Michael Collins (***/****)

He's also been working on an opera, "Grendel."--Brian

He also had a concert work, Brass Quintet No. 2, show up on an album by the Extension Ensemble last year. You can listen to sound clips at Amazon if you're interested (tracks 2, 3, and 4):

Also I wouldn't take Morricone as an example for a "lazy" composer... that man has been busier than most, just not in Hollywood.

Goldenthal has a good concert career of his art music. That and he has been very busy trying to finish "Grendel." Supposedly he is in the middle of trying to pull is together with at least another hour of music to write.Film music is not his primary focus, but it pays bills between commissions!

Hey thanks guys for the replies. I knew that Goldenthal did other things then write scores for movies but I was unsure of what he was up to now. I can't wait until he finishes Grendel; it's based off the Beowulf stories right?

Here's how the LA Opera puts it...
quote:
Elliot Goldenthal's Grendel is a darkly comic retelling of the Beowulf epic from the monster's point of view. Estranged from nature and outcast from the world of men, Grendel is a passionate thinker trapped in the body of a beast. A killer who can't control his own instincts, the great monster struggles to transcend his condition in a quest for meaning and purpose. Based on a novel by John Gardner and the Anglo-Saxon legends of Beowulf, Grendel features a score by Academy Award-winner Elliot Goldenthal, whose richly layered work unleashes moments of often unnerving emotional power. The brilliant Emmy and Tony-winning director Julie Taymor, co-author of the libretto with J.D. McClatchy, returns to create an astonishing visual world utilizing singers, dancers, film, puppetry and masks. Bass Eric Owens stars in the fascinating title role, with mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves as the cynical Dragon whose wisdom reveals Grendel's inevitable role as the Eternal Enemy. Soprano Laura Claycomb is the Queen whose beauty washes away the hostilities of sworn foes. Tenor Jay Hunter Morris is the brave warrior who fails in his quest to slay the beast. Tenor Richard Croft debuts as the Blind Harpist, a poet whose songs inspire Grendel's adversaries with visions of a glorious future and sly revisions of the bloody past. Grendel is a co-commission and co-production with the Lincoln Center Festival. It premieres 27 May 2006 and runs through the middle of June. Sounds exciting.

If you ask me, I am sure he has seen and realized the crap that goes on into Hollywood during the last years. He has therefore chosen to deal with something of more quality and value. And it's a huge shame 'cause he's one of the most talented and original composers who have worked for this genre.

So Grendel is going to be one his wife's plays? That's good. I greatly enjoyed The Lion King and every movie she has done. Whatever happened to that "quasi-Beatles" project she was rumored to be circling?
quote:
Originally posted by Demetris Christodoulides:

Because, personally, I thought it was pretty boring and un-cinematic; two things he hardly composes for.

Yeah, did you - by chance - notice that it was his last work in the genre for some years now?!?

In a recent L.A. Times article he disclosed he suffered a severe head injury as well. So that may be a reason, as well as working on Grendel.

I read that too somewhere, Mark. Wasn't he pushing himself back on the chair one day, seeing how far he could go on its two back legs? Hmmm, went TOO far back. I used to do that myself, but I was only ten years old. Anyway, I'll bet it taught the silly boy a lesson.

Apparently, it's a particularly bad idea on a tiled kitchen floor. He lost the ability to talk for a while, and if I remember correctly, he mentions in the FSM interview that he still has some slight problems with it.

I hope he scores "Ender's Game." Because he'd be perfect for that film...but I don't think Peterson is smart enough to hire him...we'll see.--Brian

Damn! I'm sure when he was playing around on that chair he never figured for permanent damage out of the deal. Well, I'm sure Chris Reeve never figured riding a horse would be so problematic either. Just goes to show you how fragile we are. But I don't see how you can avoid these things in a way. What are you supposed to do, never leave bed? Oh sure you could tell the guy not to clown around like a kid but you can't expect people to act 100% responsible 24/7 or even want to. Too bad.

Yes, I miss Elliot's film music too. FYI, he is doing Across the Universe, Juliet Taymor's film - hopefully that will be interesting!mikael

Just an odd thought. What happens if Julie doesn't like the score & wants to dump it? Does Elliot have to go sleep on the couch too?
