Raiders was a VERY nice find, Craig! It can go for a pretty price these days

Rounded out my Goldenthal collection this week:

    Demoliton Man
    Cobb
    Michael Collins

Also picked up "Sounds of Onimusha"; it's the domestic (Read: abridged) version of Onimusha's soundtrack.

Really looking forward to Michael Collins though. The clips I've heard sound great!

Anybody else catch the Family Guy tonight? The Griffins escape a tribe of natives, dodging arrows, and leap into a sea plane, all set to Raiders, with the Indy march coming in just as they take off. It's all the more funny though when the music abruptly stops when they realize they left Meg, and we see her fall face first into the water, arrows in her back.

    Goblin's Suspiria.

This thing is so different. It perfectly blends dark and moody atmosphere with some strange psychedelic sounds. But I love it a lot.

I always buy scores on cd. I find alotta UNBELEIVABLE deals in 2nd-hand shops. In fact, 80-85% of my collection is from "used" stores. Great to find alotta of OOP stuff that people are payin arms and legs for on ebay.
My last 2 purchases (not on the level of Raiders of the Lost Ark or WaterWorld...) were The Godfather 2 and TRON.

And, Alexborn, I also found the Demolition Man score, as well a coupla weeks ago. Not bad. I found my Goldenthal collection to be growing too. What's your favored score by him?

Dark and subdued, with some interesting pastoral moments. The sound quality of the recording is fantastic!

I have to say it's a dead draw between Cobb and Michael Collins...

Recommending them just doesn't do justice to how good they are. Cobb is going for about four dollars last I checked on Amazon.com.

It begins with a solo voice singing a gospel song then becomes a goregous, almost Copland like piece. It's very much in Goldenthal's style, but this is a very melodically rich score, so very unique in comparison to some of his other works. "Reno Ho" a track on the album is his most accessible action cue he's ever written IMO, with very exciting string writing and a central melodic idea driving the whole piece. He also captures the very torn psychological mind of Cobb, with lots of interesting melodies; "Cooperstown Aria" being a prime example.

Collins is similar in that it has a lot of melody and a few action-ish parts. The main theme is fantastic, and used well throughout. This one also makes an amazing and appropriate use of Sinnead O'Connor's voice and a choir. Goes for a little more than Cobb does, but still gets the same recommendation. Grand and epic!

Sorry about the ramble, but I just think they're that good

No' worries, Alex. I didn't think of it as a ramble at all. I'm glad you shared what you thought. Especially when I make the effort to track it down.
And Marian, it's funny you should bring up "Sphere" since I watched some of it a coupla nights ago. Wasn't interested in it all because of some of the reviews, but, when E.G.'s name came up in the credits, I decided to endure it for a bit so I could hear some of the score. And what I heard wasn't bad. Didn't care for the movie, though. Right now, I'm finally listening to "Final Fantasy". And so far, I'm pretty happy with it! Great tension in the string arrangements.

Marian, thank you for mentioning "Sphere". I love it. I went to 4 different places today to get and at the last place I was gonna check, there it was. $7. Mint. I wasn't gonna go to ebay, people on there want $40.
But, a really great listen. My favored tracks are Pandora's Fanfare and Manifest Fire.

Excellent! I don't have the track titles memorised, but I believe those are among my favourites as well. As a bonus, the sound quality is absolutely terrific.

BTW, unless they reprinted it, the CD has been out of print for years. I picked mine up shortly after it was announced as being OOP (early 2000 I believe).

These arrived this week after patient waiting:

Intrada's "Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte"--excellent DeVol score...a favorite 60s score alongside North's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolff?" and "The Night Walker" (Mizzy).

"Oklahoma Crude"...Mancini does country with a fun main theme and a couple of excellent dramatic cues thrown in.

And I indulged and finally bought "The Madwoman of Chaillot"--Michael Lewis. I fell in love with the theme for this on the old Gerhardt album.

After an attempt to score an X-Box 360 had failed due to overbearing lines (similar to that of the menace of The Phantom Menace) at both my local Best Buy and Media Play, I headed to the Wal-Mart by my apartment in hopes of scoring one of the Microsoft death machines. No luck, same old story. Instead, I headed to the soundtrack section and rounded up a few titles (as well as doing my part in the respect for Arrested Development by buying both season's boxed sets. Long live the Bluth family!).

HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE - Patrick Doyle
THE CONSTANT GARDENER - Alberto Iglesias

Last night I picked up 3 new releases and told about them on Peter's thread, but in case you weren't on hand:

MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA - John Williams
    STARGATE: ATLANTIS - Joel Goldsmith
    ZATHURA - John Debney

Those are in order of the best listens. Anyways, I picked up another one tonight:

    STEALTH (Score) - BT

This has been quite a hefty week for my soundtrack buys; already they have accumulated to 7 within the first 4 days of the week. I'm glad the stores in my area are closed for Thanksgiving, or I might have gone crazy and bought every soundtrack I came in contact with.

I did it again! Two new purchases on Friday:

KISS KISS, BANG BANG - John Ottman
    CARNIVALE - Jeff Beal

I must comment, Beal's Carnivale is nothing short of amazing. Not only does he one-up Thomas Newman in a lot of places (those who've heard this CD and know T. Newman's work will know what I'm talking about) but he also creates one of the most dynamic, dramatic, and original scores I've heard in a long time.

I have a feeling I;m going to return to my local Media Play on Saturday so I might as well add these release to the list:

LORD OF WAR - Antonio Pinto
    THE FLY/THE FLY 2 - Howard Shore/Christopher Young

Sorry about that. My computer was on the blink and I wanted to test that it had remembered my password. So...

Just received THE YAKUZA (Dave Grusin) from FSM. This was the one I chose as my entitlement for future mags which will not come to pass. There were about thirty other top-notch titles I could have chosen, but I went for this.

And it's a beauty. Dave Grusin, what a great composer. I've listened to it four or five times now, and it really deserves (and, I must admit, needs) those multiple listens. Alhough I'm still coming to terms with the musical journey, it's starting to make sense. After the relative ease of the first fifteen minutes it becomes increasingly obtuse, culminating in the lengthy Big Fight (yet anti-action) cue. Disorienting, or perhaps disorientating. When the robust End Titles kick in it's like coming out of a tunnel.

In other words, I absolutely adore the first quarter of an hour (GREAT, typically 70s aching romanticism - almost sounds like TV music!), then it gets difficult, and I've had to shake myself awake on occasion, but PERSEVERE folks - this is worth it!

And the Main Titles cast an awesomely beautiful spell. One of the best Main Titles of its era, with and without the film.

4 out of 5 (if it had lasted twenty-five minutes it would be a 5. But I wouldn't want it to last twenty-five minutes, so.... ZZZZzz, do you get my point, don't matter if you don't, it don't mean a ting if you ain't got that swingle). Etc.
