After countless listenings of Ottman's "Fantastic Four", Bates' "The Devil's Rejects", and Jablonsky's "The Island" I had to take a break from the thrilling action music. I looked through my collection and stumbled upon two scores that had slipped my memory as of lately: "Salem's Lot" (2004) and "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World", both done (or somewhat done) by a fantastic Aussie (I could swear he is, but I might be confused) Christopher Gordon. I popped in "Salem's Lot" and was pleasantly frightened; I had almost forgotten entirely about it, with all of these new scores taking up space in my ears. And I said I was just getting into horror scores! After a good, loud listening of "Salem's Lot" I popped in "Master and Commander" (with additional music by Iva Davies and violin contributions from Richard Tognetti) and this is what sold it for me. I don't even remember buying the damn thing; something tells me it was a Christmas present that I never got around to listening to, because I was in shock at was hearing. The score is absolutely amazing :-} Great percussion, an intelligent, original selection of classical pieces (although Bach's "Prelude from Cello Suite No. 1 in G. Major is quite familiar), and a seperation from any other bombastic score that it could have been (let's just say it was a good thing that Badelt and HZ were occupied with that other "boats on the sea" flick). Am I the only one who likes what he hears from Gordon; or is he just the quiet type? Now I gotta add "On the Beach" to my Amazon wish list.

You should also look for the score to "Moby Dick" starring Patrick Stewart. Varese released it. Great score if you ask me.

Chris Gordon has an excellent website, which has plenty of soundclips, including from a madrigal-style Renaissance-period documentary and a hilarious clay-mation action film called Ward 13. I don't think his Bass Trombone Concerto has appeared there yet.

His masterpiece is On the Beach for me, though Moby Dick, Master and Commander and Salem's Lot are also excellent. Chris is a lovely guy - I've met him twice and to my surprise he recognised me the second time, which was four months later.

    A superb composer.

Salem's Lot is my fave but the others mentioned above are all superb.

The only one I've not heard is 'When Good ghouls Go Bad', I seem to remember a lot of negative reviews on this one?

When Good Ghouls Go Bad-I LOVE IT. This was my first Gordon score and I loved it. There are a couple cues that truely are just beautiful and heartfelt and the last track the last oh 3 or 4 minutes is just breathtaking. I have his Moby Dick score, as someone else mentioned wonderful and his On the Beach score is incredible. I don't have the master commander one I need to get that one. He reminds me of Bruce Broughton, a great composer that doesn't get the attention he deserves.

Mind you - about Gordon not getting a lot of attention - he is fairly new to the business. Moby Dick was his first score, and he hasn't done too badly since then.

On the Beach is very good, and Moby Dick is nothing short of awesome.

Gordons Moby Dick and On the Beach are both fantastic. I really like this composer. I did not care for the FAr Side though. Looking for more of his scores in films to come.
