Is this a La La Land or Varese release? Do you know the run times of the tracks?

It's a Milan release. Don't know about track times, though.

Milan generally delivers on their disc running times; although I was a little disappointed with the "Dangerous Lives of Alter Boys" release. Beltrami always gets shafted with these barely 45 minute CDs.

The previews of this remind me so much of that recent film on the guy in Dracula-Van Helsing.J.

Sound clips up at the film's web site:
http://miramax.com/thebrothersgrimm/music.phpSounds pretty awesome, if you ask me. Big orchestral fairy tale sound that (based on lazily chosen thirty-second clips, anyway) manages to avoid just sounding like a rehash of Elfman or Williams (not that they're not great at this sort of thing).
I wasn't concerned, though. Gilliam films always have great music. I love the theme in "Red Riding Hood" and "Happily Ever After," I hope we get to hear more of that.

Great link James! I, too, greatly enjoy what I hear. This is definitly a summer release to look forward to just when I thought that no more good scores would come about for this season. I like how Miramax set the site up and made every track available for a 30-second taste. My favorite has to be "End Credits"; great orchestration in there. Really enjoyed the underlying themes in "Red Riding Hood" and "Sleeping Beauties". I can't wait til we get our hands on some clips from Dario's score for "V for Vendetta". He has to get Trevor Jones' "Dark City" out of my mind for the ideal-sounding score. Thanks again!

I'm barely on track 8, and I'm liking it better than most recent scores. I won't say groundbreaking, but I will say refreshing, especially after a summer full of rehashed reconizable sounds of [insert composer name here]. Quirky moments are there, but it's outlandishly conventional. Lots of detail in the music, many hidden melodies, very fun. The percussion is great, and characterizes for me the Brothers and their world the most. Of course, the vibrato strings help a heap... they are everywhere.Oddly fantastic... without trying to be!
Can't wait to see the film.

Moviefone has the entire score up for listening:
http://music.channel.aol.com/artist/main.adp?tab=album&albumid=787338
Note that the track order is reversed, so if you want to listen to it the whole way through you have to start at the bottom (or click the full CD option).I bought the CD yesterday. I've listened to it twice now and I think it's great. Like you said, lots of detail in the music, themes that grab you instantly as well as themes that take some effort on the listener's part to uncover. Substantial nods to the old guard as well, Herrmann especially, but also a little Steiner and Tiomkin. "The Forest Comes to Life" is quite an enthralling piece of work.
This hasn't happened to me in a while, but I feel inspired to write a review. I'll probably wait until after I've seen the film, though.

I knew I should have waited and put my Amazon order on hold; oh well, I guess I'll do a single order of this disc unless someone tells me what store it would be readily available at. I've got a Wal-Mart close, but I've never seen them carry any Milan release. Best Buy maybe?

This film is awesome! It's easily one of Terry Gilliam's best movies, alongside Time Bandits. Matt Damon and Heath Ledger and Jonathan Pryce and Peter Stormare obviously had a lot of fun working on this picture. Go see it now!The score is great, too. Does anyone else hear Jerry Goldsmith theme from Hollow Man creeping into the music throughout the score?

Sure do....
Goldsmith's Hollow man is in there, alongside Bernard Hermann's Vertigo in the "Forest comes to live". The frantic and energetic orchestrations remind me of Danny Elfman transforming into Elliot Goldenthal's string ostinato's and arpeggio's....It's like a romantic Dante....

(based on the score, this is one movie I am going to watch)

You're wrong. Foobsie and I both heard it, and even if it isn't the same seven notes or six notes or whatever of Hollow Man, it's still there and the resemblance is obvious. It's not a bad thing, either: the score is quite good.

Well, Goldsmith wasn't the first person in the world to write a descending motif in 3/4 time....

You know....if this was any other man than Horner... we would now have a field day of screaming rip-offs. This is not Horner and all is quiet and happy ;-)
Not that I am advocating that discussion but just take a moment and think about it :-)

Not true. I'd also be screaming "rip-off!" if Hans Zimmer had written it.
