I have a question about the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High? I could have sworn that The Cars song "Moving in Stereo" was in the movie, however when I looked at the official soundtrack I didn't see it listed. Does any one know what I'm talking about- the scene where the guy is daydreaming about the girl swimming topless in the pool...the music playing is Moving in Stereo, is it not???

You're right! It wasn't on the soundtrack. The Cars are on an earlier soundtrack, though. "Over the Edge" (1979), another teen angst film. Back in the 70s and 80s I loved The Cars. I remember when I was working at Wherehouse Records in Northern California in the fall of '78 while going to high school. We got a promo copy of The Cars first album, long before it hit big. No one would even break the seal to give it a preview! We were too busy listening to The Stones, Fleetwood Mac and Led Zeppelin. Judging by the cover, we thought it was DISCO! Ugh![Message edited by filmfactsman on 07-13-2005]

I did find the song listed on IMDB's website for the soundtrack- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083929/soundtrack However there is a disclaimer: "Please note that songs listed here (and in the movie credits) cannot always be found on CD soundtracks. Please check CD track details for confirmation." For some reason they left it off the soundtrack album which sucks- I thought it was the best scene/song in the movie, lol...[Message edited by kingcole on 07-14-2005]

Still waiting for the Over the Edge soundtrack to appear on CD..... so classic. The Cars song did eventually appear on a soundtrack CD... for the film Lucky Numbers with Travolta and Lisa Kudrow. That soundtrack is a lot of fun:

It is ironic that songtracks quite often for go some of the actual songs that are heard in the film in lieu of songs by new artists (hence the "inspired by"). These artists are cheap and generate buzz for themselves by being on a successful albumThis is generally due to contract and marketing restrictions. Another good example of this kind of foolishness is Ghostbusters which includes none (save the title song) of the actual versions of the songs played in the film. Even the score tracks are re-recordings. Madness!
Another great example of this is “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” where the version of Extreme’s “Play With Me” is not the version on the group’s debut album and almost none of the songs on the album are featured in the film.
A marvelous exception to this is School of Rock which includes not only the songs written for the film but most of the classic rock that is played. (Although they used a different Darkness song than the one featured in the film. They went with the Hit instead of what was actually played)
As for the Cars song “Moving in Stereo” it is from their self titled debut and includes some other great songs like Good Times Roll, My Best Friend's Girl, Just What I Needed, You're All I've Got Tonight. It’s an excellent album from a key New Wave Band of the 80’s. If you like Moving In Stereo, just buy the Cars album.

All of the songs on the Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure CD are in the film. Some of them are in the background, some of them only appear briefly, but they're all there. The Cars song was quite popular by the time Fast Times came out, and may have been prohibitive to license for the soundtrack album. This is certainly true of the Zeppelin song that is in the film.
That Cars album is quite a good one. I had it on vinyl for a while, but one day I loaned it to someone, and...
Um... what different versions of the songs in Ghostbusters are you talking about?
