Lots of good stuff continues to come out. What have you all been getting lately? Its interesting to see what other collectors and film music lovers are getting too.
My recent ones are:
the budget Naxos Red River-great score and its great to finally have this after all these years
Herrmann Vol 2
Alien Nation-pretty good
Jungle Book-Rozsa-I like these original tracks and there are many new cues not heard before. EXC.
Battle of Britian-Walton/Goodwin. Always liked this score. Hearing the rejected Walton score is interesting too.
Tiomkin-Citadel-Presidents Country etc.
Hollywood 95 with the Judge Dredd trailer, not as good as original or some other versions I have on tape, but interesting.
Hollywood Chronicle-Varese. good collection. I have most of these on CD already but it was worth it to get that great 2 piano version of Spellbound by Rozsa from that old 85 LP. I love that additional music on there for the train and on to the end. Great stuff. Exciting arrangement.
Several others.

A trip to the used store this week. I turned down BIRTH and GIRL WITH THE PEARL EARRING both by Desplat for $9 each and am beginning to wonder if I screwed up there. I haven't heard any Desplat and so I didn't know what I'd be getting into there. I also said no to Philip Glass's FOG OF WAR too.So what did I cart home instead?
PATTY HEAST by Scott Johnson. I had this on LP but not CD.
A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT by Angelo Badalamenti.
ALEXANDER by Vangelis.
FOR YOUR EYES ONLY (Ryko disc w/extra cues) by Bill Conti.

HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN (John Williams) - I was extremely pleased with this: I think it's the best of the three so far, with just the minor quibble that there doesn't really seem to be a satisfying pay-off for the finale. Mind you, I've only heard it once, so it's early days yet. On the whole it's a splendid work. I absolutely adore those JANE EYRE touches, something I hadn't heard from Williams since about, oooh, since JANE EYRE. Gorgeous. And that manic big band piece? That might annoy the hell out of some of you, but I loved it. It crossed my mind that Alex North's A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE may have been the template for that (you can all now jump in and tell me what the template for STREETCAR was). Plenty of enthralling action music too, with the minimum of meandering. I liked REVENGE OF THE SITH, but this is even better.

John, what was that "Herrmann Vol 2" you got? Is that from Varese, the Fox collection? If so, it's a great purchase. I adore that KING OF THE KHYBER RIFLES score - thundering "Main Titles" and absolutely beautiful quintessential Herrmann "Nocturne". PRINCE OF PLAYERS is good too, but my favourite of the three scores is still GARDEN OF EVIL. There's one particular stand-out cue on that (which is saying something), which showcases an interestingly mathematical approach (duh - maybe) to scoring. It may be "The Chase", but whatever it is, just listen to how Herrmann starts with a two-note rising motif, then comes back with a three-note answer, then a four-note call, then a five-note... but you see the pattern - all the way to a twenty-five note slurry! Count 'em! (actually don't, because then you'll tell me that there aren't actually twenty-five notes in that final upward glissando, pointing out that a glissando hasn't actually got separate notes in it. Or has it?) I haven't heard the Morgan-Stromberg re-recording. How did they handle it? And did they DO a re-recording. Please answer the second question first (and if the answer is "no", ignore the first question).

I'll be paying for a CD end of this month which is an OOP and rare CD.I'm gonna also try to pay for another one from a friend of mine...but gotta wait and see if I can. Anyways I'll still list it.
The first CD I'm getting is Mark Mancina's original Twister score.
The second CD which I hope I can buy from one of my friends is the original Land Before Time CD in mint and sealed condition.
Edit: Duh I'm an idiot...I also re-bought my Back To The Future Part 2 CD (since I needed to lol) as well as the Star Wars Episode I TPM OST.
I gotta buy me a new copy of the ROTS soundtrack since for some reason there was a big white blotch that some how ended up on the CD and tracked 6-end aren't playable.

There's been a lot of talk about Desplat but I haven't heard any of his scores. As a Golden Ager, I aprroach newer composers and scores with acution in mind. However, I'm thinking you are right and these need to be picked up if they are still around.

I would just like to say that I'm enjoying Ottman's "Fantastic Four" more than I thought I would. The album is solid, well-rounded, and there's admirable thematic nuance that clearly hearkens back to Goldsmith. That is all.

On recommendation, I went back and picked up the two Desplat scores, GIRL WITH THE PEARL EARRING and BIRTH, but I haven't played them yet. I also picked up a Jean-Michel Jarre score to a 70s film LES GRANGES BRULEES and Scott Walker's score to POLA X. I also picked up Ferde Grofe's TABLOID SUITE which is on a 2 cd set along with yet another GRAND CANYON SUITE and Gershwin's CONCERTO IN F.

Jon--Good for you. North is pretty solid.-------
Ok, I picked up some more stuff and placed an order to Footlight Records.
In already are:
All-Time Greatest Movie Themes & Schemes-Montenegro (which is an RCA/BMG compilation of mainly Montenegro doing covers with a few originals thrown in)
The Merchant of Venice-Pook
---
On their way:
Une Vie & other films by Elizabeth Rappeneau-Adenot (I'm curious so we'll see)
Femme Fatale-Sakamoto (someone made me a cassette of it I've been playing to death but in the end it's not enough--I just had to fork over the cash for it)
The Wild One/Private Hell 36-Stevens (I already had the German CD of The Wild One and the Spanish reissue LP of Private Hell but a CD of Private Hell--Finally!!--was too good to pass up. Private Hell is crime jazz at its very finest.)
Tarkovsky-Artemiev (Another pricy CD but with tracks from Solaris, Mirror, and Stalker how could I say no, their music is unique to say the least especially all the layered choir and electronics in Solaris that is so toned down in the film that this will be like hearing it for the first time)
-----
Played Girl with a Pearl Earring. I'm still digesting it. I liked the main motif (which is good since it shows up often), and there's a cue that has a neat "chase" rhythm for strings. The finale cue was influenced by the crescendo school where getting louder and faster is supposed to mean more tragic and dramatic. That didn't mean I couldn't listen to it and it may work well that way in the film but I've heard the approach so often (die, Horner, die) that it doesn't work on me emotionally as it should.
