...it's a straight re-issue of the Warner Bros LP, orange jacket and all. No additional music from Summer of 42 aside from the two tracks. drg records.

Those who may know, is there a story behind why no more music from this film is available for release?

Ya got me. I was kind of hoping FSM would do a reissue of the original tracks but dealing with Warners is tricky.

While I appreciate DGRs efforts, I find their productions lacking to say the least.

I am being funny here, but maybe Legrand only wrote two tracks of music for the film, which were then used whevener necessary. Of course, this is all that's needed to win an Oscar for music, right?

Why on earth even Legrand's people can't get this released is beyond me. There is no better PR than "best original score" for soundtrack albums! Good grief! Someone release the award-winning score already.

Couldn't they have at least added the main title music? You can lift that right off of a DVD. Ah, well...

Well Peter...Legrand did really only write one theme for the film (and scored it in less than a week). But there is definitely MORE music than what is on the LP/CD. Actually...I think those 2 tracks may even be a re-recording.

No one mentioned how beautiful Michel Legrand's other score on the CD from "The Picasso Summer" is. I sometimes watch that film just to hear the music. Back in the 80s, Johnny Mandel told me that he suspected that Legrand won his Oscar for "Summer of '42" because his "Picasso Suite" was the primary music on the album. He said the voting Academy members would be sent the soundtrack as a promotion. When they listened to it, they assumed that the music was all from "Summer of '42".

I've never seen PICASSO SUMMER and haven't ever seen it available in any form here in the U.S.

How were you able to see it?

    James

Ahh...I did an eBay search and see it was issued on VHS. Funny...I never knew that.

Someone is also selling a DVD of it, but I have a feeling it is a bootleg.

And none of the sellers offer any artwork of the cover of the video.

PICASSO SUMMER showed on AMC or TCM at some point. I know because I taped it onto vhs and watched it. I may still have it too but god only knows where. I liked it too. Though it has a bizarre premise, a young married couple kind of falling apart while on vacation in Europe where they hope to visit Picasso's house and see him. And, it has a great score by Legrand which I'm glad they used to fill out the Summer of 42 album even if it doesn't have anything to do with Summer of 42.

And while I thing this is great, I wish they'd done this before I spent $20 getting the foreign one!

I really can't believe this entire score hasn't been released. There is at least enough music to warrent a 30 minute CD (would couple nicely with another wonderful Legrand score, "The Happy Ending").

What's included on the French CD are the final two cues heard in the film (the track "Theme from Summer of '42" is a variation that plays on a record player in the film's most beautiful and emotional scene, while "The Summer Knows" is the finale), and while these are the highlights of the score, there are several more pieces that I'd love to have (including the main titles).

Anybody know if the mastertapes still exist for this?

It's not much consolation but the main titles can be recorded right off of the DVD.
