My God that set sure covers a lot of great ground! In a way it's also a shame since to get just one or two basic cues from some of these is too little. LE SAUVAGE for instance is a great score by him whose LP I cherish and desrves to be reissued in its entirety. The Main Theme will be nice to have on CD but I want ALL OF IT. The same goes for many of these others as well. Still, that's not a criticism of the set per se. I can't expect Universal Jazz France to issue 40 CDs of Legrand even if I think they should. In any case, this sampler will be the definitive sampler for Legrand film scores (and it looks as if none are re-records which is the way to do it).

    Lou,

There's a CD from France on the Playtime label that has music from 3 films by Jean-Paul Rappeneau/Michel Legrand. There are 10 tracks from LE SAUVAGE on it. While it isn't the complete album, it's pretty close. Also you get music from LA VID DE CHATEAU (1965) and LES MARIES DE L'AN II (1970).

I got mine on eBay and see them there often.

    James

Holy Christ I had no idea Playtime did a Legrand disc with LE SAUVAGE. Thanks. Wish me luck finding one. I'll start looking but if you see one feel free to e-mail me. If I can't find one what are the chances of getting a cdr from you.

The LE SAUVAGE disc is in!!

I've never seen Jean-Paul Rappeneau's first film La Vie De Chateau (aka A Matter of Resistance). It's on DVD and looks tempting. The studio tapes have seen some wear. The theme is really nice, if slight, but it doesn't really get played through or developed enough in the few cues there are.

The real surprise of the disc is Les Maries de L'An Deux. I'd never even heard of this Belmondo film and it looks like it might be a lot of fun. Though one never knows. I finally caught up with Chinese Adventures in China/Up To His Ears with its amazing Delerue score just to find that the film itself is all silly and not very funny slapstick. In any case, Legrand uses a lot of mock Baroque rounds and harpsichord all to great effect.

Le Sauvage is still as beautiful as ever although the score is all over the map from Vegas show jazz to Italian operetta. It really soars when playing the two beautiful themes it has though and its great to finally have this one on cd after so many years of wondering when it would show up.

One problem this points to is that I've wanted a cd of it for so long and somewhat by accident learned of its existance. It was there but I didn't know about it, never learned about it. Somehow it slipped through regular channels. Just a reminder that to really keep up on what's out there on cd, dvd, vhs, in film books, etc. is practically a full time job of networking, asking around, making trades, scanning Ebay, spending big bucks, etc. If I put all the effort I put into building a collection into buying stocks I'd be a rich man by now.

In any case, back to Le Sauvage (aka Lovers Like Us, a fun romp with Yves Montand & Catherine Deneuve that I saw back in the late 70s and haven't seen since). A lot of the little clicks and snaps that I thought were part of my pressing turn out to be on the original tape! The tape too has seen a little wear (the piano is fuzzier than usual) and there's an odd volume level change in one of the cues that strikes me as someone's accident. Nevertheless, to just put on the score and program the best cues has been a dream fulfilled.

Now if I can only find the cash to get this huge 4 disc set of Legrand I'll be set with good sounds for another month.
