This is a very good and solid score by Harry Gregson-Williams. It's probably his best effort yet. Much of the score has an "old" sound to it, re-enforcing the movie's time frame. There are no heroic themes present, like Gladiator, and if anything, the themes meant for heroes are very tragic ("Rise A Knight"). "Sibylla," a beautiful love theme, is touching and surprising, especially the brief and affective piano performance at the track's beginning; equally nice is "Swordplay" with it's (again) brief swashbuckling introduction. The best part of the score is "Wall Breached" in the first minute or so ... the choir and percussion is very strong, but much of the action is lost after the stunning opening. "The Battle of Kerak" is a better action set-piece from begining to end. A definite classical thematic influcence in Kingdom Of Heaven is the Tallis Fantasia piece by Vaughan Williams, and it's used to great effect.

The weakest parts of the score are in the "journey" sounding cues "To Jerusalem" and "Ibelin." Both have a childish Prince Of Egypt / Gladiator middle-eastern "sound" to them. (That's no surprise, however, as Gregson-Williams did co-write Prince Of Egypt with his brother, Rupert Gregson-Williams, and Hans Zimmer.)

Overall, great effort! I'm glad he replaced Hans Zimmer on this one. (I'm a little curious as to what Zimmer came up with, since he did state in a press conference for The Last Samurai that he had written music for Kingdom Of Heaven and that he was going to Morocco [where the film was being shot] to share his compositions with Ridley Scott.)

According to a post at FSM, a lot of the music in the film is from the temp track (by Revell, Goldsmith, Beltrami and others). Does anyone know if this replaced the score by HGW or is in addition to what's on the album?

Since this is Ridley Scott we're talking about, it probably replaced parts of Gregson-Williams' score.

There's also audio interview with Harry Gregson-Williams available from the American iTunes—it sounds interesting, and does he (his voice) ever sound almost identical to Hans Zimmer!
