In case anyone didn't know, you can get Alexandre Desplat's score to THE UPSIDE OF ANGER at iTunes.I e-mailed New Line Records and inquired if they had plans to release the score as a commercial CD and this was their quick reply:
Thank you for your interest in New Line Records. Unfortunately, the soundtrack to "The Upside of Anger" is currently only being released online through iTunes and not on CD format. We apologize for any inconvenience, but we hope you and other film music fans will enjoy the songs online.
Thank you again for your interest!
Sincerely,
New Line Records
Los Angeles, CASo there you have it. Personally I think that they've really done a disservice to Desplat. Their release of BIRTH took forever and they really could have marketed that score better as it got a lot of favorable notices (more so than the film that it was written for.) I guess they would rather promote MONSTER IN-LAW's song CD.

Yes they would. I hate to sound like a prude, but the film performed below expectations despite favorable reviews and for them to release the score on cd at this time would be pointless. As a matter of fact, we even passed on it. I'm sure it's a wonderful score, but the market is as such that it would get lost and sell only 1000 units. . .if THAT!MV

Yeah...thanks for the feedback MV. Seeing as you replied both here at at FSM's board I'll respond both places the same.I'm sure you guys are just raking in the dough on "Laws of Attraction."
Look...it's not that I don't understand the business side of the equation. I just happen to think New Line Records sucks. They screwed up when they didn't try to cash in on the Austin Powers craze with a score CD to "Goldmember" and then they release most of their score CDs so long after the fact, that it elminates any sales while the film is still fresh.
Why the hell do I have to defend my complaint here? I just think iTunes is a very limiting way to distribute music and some of us prefer an ACTUAL CD!
I got an idea. Screw having anything in CD format. Let's just put it all on iTunes. That should save Lukas some dough on his FSM titles for the future, as well as all the other distributors out there.
Jeeze.

JamesFirst off, that was uncalled for. Secondly, we have done quite well with Laws of Attraction. As a matter of fact, it's one of our best sellers. We benefitted from releasing the cd when the film came out and the fact that Mr Shearmur is a more well known composer, especially after his Sky Captain score came out.
Economics 101:
Project costs $10,000 to produce. You sell cd at an average of $7 per unit. For a release like this, one that is months after the fact, you might be lucky to move 1000 to 2000 units. If you move 2000, you make $14,000 gross. Of course, when you factor in royalties you might walk away with $2,500 - $3,000 profit. Now, this is not accounting for the 1000 cds you will most likely receive as returns a year later from vendors like Tower, Virgin, etc. . . So, you have actually lost money on the project.
Perhaps some day another company will release it as a limited edition cd if Mr Despalt's star continues to rise. Hell, in a few years I might even do that! I'm a fan of his work, but to release the cd now is hardly worth it to appease a few hundred people.
Now, if I can get a slew of you to want a release of this, I might second think the project. This is similiar to Blade:Trinity. We were considering doing it, but there wasn't enough interest, so we passed.
