Some of you may have read about this at FSM. If not, this may
interest you. There was a movie called Sundown: The Retreat of the Vampire with
a score by Richard Stone. You can buy this used at Amazon for less
than $4.00. I doubt if any of us have seen this movie, but I encourage
you to get a copy of the CD if you like westerns. The opening western theme was pretty good. It was followed by
ANOTHER rousing western theme. Then there are several MORE
slow lovely themes and action themes within the context of the
total score. In an era of "themeless" composing, this is a delight.
Tracks 9 and 18 rarely left my player today. I hear
a touch of Morricone in some of the orchestrations and melodies,
a wee bit of Broughton in the rousing parts, and some Elmer Bernstein
signature rhythms in the last track. But mostly I heard
Stone's authentic voice, and I'm sorry he can no longer compose
for us as he died.I'm am rather amazed that a CD was made of this as I'm sure very
few people ever saw the movie or heard the score. If you like westerns,
I suggest you get this one.posted 04-19-2005 05:14 PM PT (US)

I very much agree with you, Joan. Great score! I used to recommend this score all the time to my customers. I would kid them and tell them it was Richard Gere on the cover... Doesn't it look like Richard Gere?? Usually, all it would take is for them to hear the first track on the disc and it was sold. Any red-blooded fan of Elmer Bernstein's Western music will gobble this score up. I would like to see Silva Screen re-issue this soundtrack. Richard Stone was a great composer and I think he left us too soon.

Glad you recommend it too. Gere? Okay, but the guy on the cover is rather burned up. I wish this movie would be released in DVD. I'd love to see how the music is used in various parts and why certain sad melodies were composed. Quite amazing.

Me only know the track found on Silva's Vampire Circus compilation. Very good stuff indeed.

Good horror, comedy, western score.
Not to mention it has Bruce Campbell in it playing a decendent of Van Helsing =)[Message edited by Jeff78 on 04-19-2005]

Jeff, have you seen this movie? Has anyone seen it? I'm curious about it.Here is the synopsis from the score booklet.
"Buried deep in the heart of the vast Arizona desert is Purgatory-a small, laid back, otherwise nondescript town, with one exception-its inhabitants are all retired vampires.
When Dave Harrison is urgently summoned to Purgatory to fix the town's synthetic blood plant, his family settles in, perplexed only by the population's strange fetish for dark glasses, large hats and sunblock #100. But as night falls, a revolution is brewing, and a band of vampires sick of synthetic blood gather together to bat around the idea of ending their retirement in their thirst for the real thing."Sounds very corny, but the music is all rousing western sounds and lovely melodic pieces punched by lots a action riffs.

yes, I saw it back in the early 90's when Army of Darkness first came to video. I wanted to watch it because it had Bruce Campbell in it. Anyways it's not scary at all, it's more of a comedy. Bruce is hilarious in it. It is corny, but a fun corny. I suggest renting it if you can find it.

Thank you for your response, Jeff. I've checked a few places for the video but no luck so far. I don't hear much comedy in the music, so that comes as a surprise. I'll keep looking.[Message edited by joan hue on 04-20-2005]

Well now that I think about it, there is no comedy music in the score. And the movie is not aimed as a comedy (you'll find the movie of course in the horror section of video stores). The movie has the same kind of horror with comedy elements as Fright Night. But it's been over 10 years since I've seen it, so its alittle hard for me to remember more then that.
