Well I last night ripped the isolated score for Starship Troopers from the Special Edition DVD (100% digital stereo rip btw) and I for one really love this score by Basil Poledouris.I also like the movie...yeah it's a bit cheezy but to me it's a cheezy fun Sci-Fi movie.
So who else here likes Basil's Starship Troopers score...?

I like this score. Great main theme. I wish Basil would do more movies.NP: The coffee perking

Aside from the main theme, that "Bugs!!" track is a terrific action cue. Oh, and "Dizzy's Funeral" is a solid piece that manages emotion without cliche.I recommend his score for The Touch; while sometimes electronics-heavy, it does have a lovely main theme.

One of the best Poledouris scores. And one of the best-sounding CDs in my collection (it's a HDCD). Some very good stuff is missing from the official album, I hope there'll be an expanded release someday.

BigT, this is an awesome score. One of Poledouris's best, in my opinion. The drop music is certainly a highlight, as is the "Tango Urilla" action cue: I love the finale of that piece, where all the action quiets down and a calming, wonderous resolution kicks in—sort of in amazement, like Casper Van Dien's character can't even believe that he just killed that huge bug (and Poledouris plays it perfectly)!I have a question about the DVD isolated score: Are there any volume drops in the music? (I've noticed this with isolated score tracks like Pearl Harbour, where the music volume drops to accommodate to dialogue or sound effects and it isn't corrected when the music track is isolated. It's a pain-in-the-ass going through each track and having to adjust all the levels so the music volume is consistent.)

Sean,I think for Klendathu Drop there is a bit at the begining but it's really not noticable. Everything is pretty solid as far as consistant volume goes.
Marian,
The DVD Isolated score for the Special Edition is every piece of music that Basil wrote for the film.

Edit: Glad to know there's others here who like this score too.

For me, Klendathu Drop is one of the ultimate statements in action movie scoring... pure adrenaline! Meanwhile, Dizzy's Funeral is very poignant. It's a great score... and the movie is a bit of a guilty pleasure, except for some of the over-the-top graphics.

My favorite cues are Klendathu Drop, Tango Urilla, Bugs, Evacuation and Rico's Roughnecks - Destruction Of Roger Young.

Hey BigT, thanks for the reply! I just noticed that the email address in my profile is an old one that's probably inactive, as I haven't used it in years. I'll change that address immediately.I'm glad the isolated score is intact. I think I'll pick up this DVD, since it's such a wicked film and score! Music that's not ot on the CD that I enjoyed: the music that starts off percussion-only as everyone is running to the TV screens at the Federation base to see what's happened (right after the bug's have attacked), and the shuttle flying music is cool and heroic, as far as I can remember.

This is a great score. The "drop" cue is fantastic. So in Urilla Tango. Great cues. I love all the brass in it. J.

Isolated score on DVD is interspersed with interesting Poledouris commentary. But sometimes he start talk when music cue tail is still heard.

That didn't bother me. If you're good at editing like I am, you can do a clean fade out and still won't ruin the cue.

That maybe so, but I was pointing out to those interested that the isolated score does not represent everything written for the film. If one wishes to do an assembly that has everything Poledouris wrote for the film you'll need the Varese album.Neil

By the way you're wrong. I just recently listened to the Varese album ...There's ONE cue that has a bit of unused music in which was "Tango Urilla" at the begining. But like the rest of the score the OST is pretty much a hacked up job. The DVD Isolated score is 99.9% all of Basil's original score untouched. Also enough of this "written and intended" for crap...NOT EVERYONE wants scores that have every original note that was written for score of the film. *rolls his eyes*

The cue Bugs! is also different on the Varese album than on the DVD. Much different orchestration. And if you were able to get the boot, there are about 6 or so alternate cues not on the DVD or OST. Makes for a nice big 2cd set. I love mine.
