Jurassic Park and Hook
Much of his recent composing derive from these two.

The Empire Strikes Back, easily the greatest of all his Star Wars scores (so far anyway) and E.T.

If Jurassic Park is one of his greatest scores, does that mean Patrick Doyle is better than Williams, since some of JP is clearly influenced by Doyle's Henry V?Neil

One thing I hate about topics like this is that I post a reply and then end up saying, "Oh yeah!" and wanting to change my mind. But here goes:Close Encounters Of The Third Kind

While I never want to try to say two particular scores from my favorite composer, I'll mention the three at the top of my list:1. E.T.
2. Close Encounters
3. Raiderswhat the hell, the rest from my top ten:
4. Superman
5. Jaws
6. Star Wars
7. Jurassic Park
8. Hook

His greatest and most underrated score: The Fury.
Nice to see CE3K and Jane Eyre listed here, though.

E.T. and JawsSuperman,
Star Wars,
Raiders of the Lost Ark,
Close Encounters of the Third Kind, after that its harder
Jurassic Park
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
The Towering Inferno
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.1 through 6 are pretty much in order, the last 4 can change on a whim, when Lost World might replace JP, or HPPOA replaces HPSS. Empire Strikes Back is always close to the top 10

Raiders of the Lost Ark and the original Star Wars score are his two greatest, at least in terms of their long lasting impact and readily identifiable themes (the Raider's march, the Star Wars main title music, etc).
People know what the music is for when they hear it, much like the opening of Beethoven's 5th. This is not an easy thing to accomplish in music.Other Williams' greats:
Schindler's List
Jaws
CE3K
ET

Star Wars and CE3K for me, but I love all of Williams' works so it really doesn't matter.

For me the top two are Jaws and Jane Eyre. There are other great scores by him as well obviously all of which have been mentioned here by others. I can't say I love everything by Williams and I can't say I even rank him as highly as I do other composers (which is especially considered a blasphemy by those who worship him like a god). I'm glad he's in the biz though since he gave symphonic scoring a good name at a time when it looked like a dinosaur and as the last Harry Potter score told us, he still sounds a lot better than most of the guys out there working around him. Also, he is one of the few composers I actually have met in person and in person he was one of the nicest guys I ever met.
