Just watched this movie here in Zurich yesterday. I really liked it. This was also the first time a heard music from Desplat. I must say, this was a pretty good score. I was surprised that it was a big orchestral sounding score.Any news on a CD release?

The music did have a big orchestral sound. Places had very scarey music and other parts were tender. I too was impressed.

I actually really liked this movie and score. The whole thing had a very '70s European vibe, a lot of the time the imagery and music played more like a horror film than an action-thriller. I half expected to see a close-up of black-leather-gloved hands delicately wielding a razor-sharp knife, giallo-style.It's a shame there is no soundtrack release. Though the end credits (once on DVD) provide a lengthy suite of Desplat's score.

"...music played more like a horror film.."
Yes, Ryan, I agree. Also, I think that was intentional. (Speculation on my part, I know.) Ben Foster was amazing as the creepoid villian, just reprehensible. At times, I felt he was filmed like an alien or insect. (His scrabbling through the air ducts, his dropping down from the ceiling, etc.) I speculated that the director wanted us to see him as almost an alien and certainly not view him as human. Hence, the horror music seemed apt.NP The Stalking Moon.

Well seeing as Amazon France is listing it as an import, my guess is it will be released here also. Don't rush to buy from overseas just yet.James

Joan -- I think it was intentional too. I also loved the swirling fog around Willis as he was slowly drawn into the world of negotiating again. The villain certainly slowly transformed into the over-the-top baddie that I enjoy. I particularly like his slow stalk through the burning hallway armed with two molotov cocktails.Nothing like some OTT cheese to thrill!

Well MV, LaLaLand should consider doing Desplat's THE UPSIDE OF ANGER. That score is quite good and recorded in London.James

Well actually I'm from the Netherlands so it's not so overseas for me, but I'll wait nonetheless as it's sometimes cheaper to buy in the US and ship them to the Netherlands then it is to buy it in Europe.

As Michael said, New Line has released UPSIDE. It's also available now in the U.S. iTunes store.

I just saw this film on DVD tonight and have to say it was a rather exciting thriller. As for the score, it was one of the best I've heard recently. Being familiar with quite a bit of Desplat's work overseas, I wasn't surprised. It was just nice to see a film where the score was given such a spotlight without being bombastic.
While everyone seems to want to argue about the merits of BATMAN BEGINS or STAR WARS, it's a shame that something like Desplat's HOSTAGE (which he composed, orchestrated and conducted by himself!) goes unnoticed because the film isn't a blockbuster.
I can't wait to finally get the CD.

HOSTAGE is one of the better scores I've bought this year. This and BIRTH is all I've heard from the composer so far but I'm certainly looking forward to hearing more.

The score is absolutely amazing, one of the best efforts of this year for sure. What we have here is a very talented and promising composer.

I think what most people appreciated in this effort is that - judging by the movie it escorted - Desplat could easily get away with a typical and perhaps tedious action / suspense score without a personality, i.e. a tried and tested formula.Instead he decided to actually sit down, work and invest in this score to which he gave his magic, elegant touch that dominates his whole complex, fresh, dynamic and original approach. This is what makes it special and different from many other scores of the genre.
