MUSIC (SCORE)

FINDING NEVERLAND
HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN
LEMONY SNICKET'S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS
THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST
THE VILLAGE

MUSIC (SONG)

"Accidentally In Love" - SHREK 2
"Al Otro Lado Del Río" - THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES
"Believe" - THE POLAR EXPRESS
"Learn To Be Lonely" - THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
"Look To Your Path (Vois Sur Ton Chemin)" - THE CHORUS

Nice to see most of the song nominees are songs written by the composer of the score.

I'm hoping FINDING NEVERLAND or THE VILLAGE win for score. I'd rather not see Debney win for PASSION....

James

I'm glad Debney finally gets a nomination. He's been around for quite a while now and allthough he has scored too many comedies, he is still one of my favorites. My guess is Finding Neverland though.

Thankfully I do not have to hack the moviemusic website and destroy the business (no Troy nomination, whew). But dang, this is not exciting. They are good noms, all expected... but me wanted surprises!

I am surprised. I never would have imagined that Williams' Harry Potter and Newton-Howard's Village would have been nominated. If you were going on the basis of the Golden Globes, this list couldn't be more different.

Thank goodness nothing for Sideways, The Incredibles, A Very Long Engagement or various other scores which were just not at this level. Good to see the Passion gets the company it deserves. Here's for Newton Howard, Newman or Kaczmarek to take it.

Seeing as I get up before God to go to work everyday, I was able to see the nomination coverage live at 5:30am PST.

I flipped over to "E!" and saw that skank "reporter" Giuliana DePandi interviewing the director and producer of the upcoming Oscar show. All she seemed to ask about was Chris Rock as host, but the director mentioned the musical numbers will now be formulated, stating that "Phantom of the Opera" and "The Incredibles" would be included which was confusing. "The Incredibles" WASN'T nominated in that category and to make matters worse, skank Giuliana DePandi then interviewed Brad Bird via phone about "The Incredibles," informing him the film had 4 nominations, not the 3 he thought. Bird was very excited and gave a great interview, ending with special mention that he was glad Michael Giacchino was nominated and how hard he worked on the film and what a great break it was for him into feature films. Of course no one corrected Brad Bird, and it came off as an awkward situation. I felt bad for both him and Giacchino.

Interesting... Howard Shore wins a Golden Globe but not nominated by the academy. Couldn't help but notice that, FWIW. -Greg-

I know, they don't know what good music is if it hit them in the face.

"Spongebob and Fat Albert"

Didn't get to see your 2 favorite flicks, and none of the 5 nominees. Listened to THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST at the store. Wanted to like it... perhaps will give another try sometime. Doubt I'll ever hear the score in context.

The similarity in film genre of the 5 nominated scores is fascinating.

Two fantasy scores (arguably light thrillers), one thriller/romance (arguable also with elements of fantasy), a brutal biopic (arguably made as a thriller), and a fantasy biopic (arguably also a romance). You have a point.

According to the poll, it looks like the popular vote is split between The Passionof the Christ and Prisoner of Azkaban. Will the mainstream be surprised? Go underdogs!

I think it's a pretty good list of nominations. I'm especially glad to see the Academy didn't think Williams had enough nominations, because I honestly thought POA was some of his best work in years.

Also, I really like the Passion score. It does lose a little bit out of context, I guess, but it's still a very respectable work. If nothing else, it's good to see Debney scoring something besides lightweight family comedies. He is actually a very talented and versatile composer, and I hope he continues to get varied projects.

I dunno; I think I'd be happy seeing any of those guys up there. Pretty good choices this year, I think.

Also, they seem to be from films that didn't get many nods in a lot of the "major" categories (except for Neverland, of course). Could it be that the music was actually the deciding factor in the nomination process this year?

I've heard Prisoner of Azkaban, The Village, A Series of Unfortunate Events and Passion of the Christ.

Of these the two I like best are The Village and Prisoner of Azkaban.

Passion of the Christ was way too overblown and Unfortunate Events was too underplayed for my liking (great underscore, just not my type of music.)

While I see that Prisoner of Azkaban is one of John William's better works in recent times, Williams has won way too many oscars and awards. The Village is what I want to win.

The more I listen to these 5 scores, the more I agree with the Academy's choices this year. I think all 5 are superb scores, although maybe Lemony Snicket seems out of place since the score wasn't such a success and we've had so much better from Newman in the past. But still, it's a great score.

With regards to the other 4 - I love them all immensely, and this year I think Williams was nominated not becuase of the academy's love affair with him, but becuase he managed to write a sequel score of immense caliber which has it's own identity while not ignoring it's predecessors.
