The Belgian Label Promtheus Records is releasing the full score to Cutthroast Island (+/- 145 minutes). I don't know the exact release date, but it should be within the next few weeks / months.

For me personally this is fantastic news. Cutthroat Island is one of my all time favorites. Ever since I listened to Debney's swashbuckle score I was a fan of his.

Where did you read this news? If it's true, this is spectacular! Cutthroat is easily one of the greatest swashbucking scores of the last 25 years. Can you provide a link to the news?

    Sweetness!

So long as the sound quality can match the Silva release...this will be one heck of a release. The original is a CLASSIC!

Was this the release which was rumored to contain the re-orchestrated cue he did for the "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" trailer? I recall someone mentioning this expanded edition and that cue way back when the film was released. However, I stress the rumor status of that...rumor

Here are some details about the release from Ford Thaxton.

    =====

It will be 2 CD set with the entire score (which runs about 120 minutes) plus alternate takes,a few cues without the choir and as an extra special bonus track it will have the synth demo version of the first two cues (Morgan’s Ride and The Rescue) that got him the gig in the first place.

It’s an amazing look into the creative process to hear how these pieces started and ended up sounding for full orchestra and choir.

    =====

    I can't wait!

    Question being...

Was there anything in the movie that was not on the CD and that is worth the extra $$$?

Haven't seen the movie in a long time, and I don't intend to. I seem to recall though that pretty much everything of interest was on the CD. Whatever was left off the OST wasn't that essential.

I just never saw the big deal with this score. True, I pretty much detest everything Debney has composed, but when listening to CUTTHROAT ISLAND I found it such an unfocused mess of noisy drivel and I lost count of how many times I heard the temp track screaming through his cues that I simply lost interest.

From what I've read I don't think it's a limited edition release. But don't expect this to be the usual Varese release either.

According to Ford Thaxton it will be a bit longer before the CD is released, the artwork for this project was only approved yesterday.

Just got it today in the mail.

I am already past disc one (72:24). Disc 2 is now playing (73:12)

    FANTASTIC

    Demerits:
    - sound quality has not improved. I still need to turn on my EQ and set it to preset #4
    - This needs an SACD/DVD-Audio release or ISO 5.1 score in the next DVD-release.

Pirates of the Carribean does not hold a candle to this stunning piece of work..

My thanks and congrats to all the guys at Prometheus who made it possible. Never gonna put the old-one in the player again.

The sound quality absolutely HAS improved on this release of CUTTHROAT ISLAND. I have compared all 3 versions and there has been a substantial improvement with each release. This one sounds the best. Foobs, turn off the equalizer! Take the butter cookie dough out of your ears!

I'll try... but you have to taste it first... Come on'... take a lick :-)

No in all seriously... It still sounds like a Shawn Murphy recording. Preset #4 is designed to address that issue and cue it up to an HDCD-sound platform :-)
Heck.. I finally found a name for it... I'll rename it "S.Murphy". I'll probably need it for ROTS as well

The notes on this release could have been more comprehensive. There are tracks on here that have no explanation. "The Wedding Waltz" is one of them as is an alternate "Carriage Chase" that runs 5 seconds longer. I think it's a different ending.

Mike, where's the "substantial" improvement in sound? It may be there (I can't hear anything improved), but it's certainly not substantial.

These Prometheus CDs keep getting more expensive, yet production values keep going down, which is really unfortunate. The front cover totally looks like a lot of cheap bootleg CD covers I've seen on Ebay.

Seems there was one helluva missed opportunity to really do something special with this music, like a 5.1 channel mix, or even something as basic as the Dolby surround mixes heard on the George Korgold CD issues. This is a huge score, and I hope one day to hear it coming from all angles, because that's where this score really lives!

I am glad to hear the new stuff, although most of the bonus tracks are useless. The same tracks as heard earlier, but without an element like the choir? Why?

I don't know about the rest of you but I actually own all three versions of Cutthroat Island When I listen in the car, which is where I do most of my listening, I can absolutely tell there's a sonic difference between each release. Keep in mind, we're talking about a score that was recorded under good conditions. I think it sounds better and I definitely hear an improvement over the previous releases. As for the bonus cues, who cares why they are on there? If you program that stuff, you still have about 2 hours of music. Isn't that like 50 minutes longer than the previous release? As for the pricing, Prometheus CDs come from Europe. The Euro is not kind to us these days.

Mike, if you definitely hear an improvement, where is it? Tell me where you can hear this distinct improvement. I own all the releases, too, so that's not the issue. Perhaps I should get in my car too to hear the improvements? Or my schooner?

There's no improvement in sound. Not to me. If someone thinks otherwise, I am open to the idea. This isn't bitching... it's perhaps a test of my own ears, or a chance for anyone who thinks otherwise to get down to business and point out the points. I want to hear the improvements.

No disrespect here, but quit dodging me bullets. If there is a "substantial" improvement in sound, please give me an example. I think this is the third time I've asked for it.

No one else here is suggesting there is improved sound, so who are you talking about? So far: two votes for no improvement, and only one vote for "substantial" improvement. Even Thaxton made no mention of improved or remastered sound in his description provided by Woods up there, which would have been a big selling point.

To my ears, there's no improvement. I can't hear it. I would love to be told otherwise, but not "just because others say so." Dude, I'm a Macadamia nut. Not very easy to crack.

I'm not dodging any bullets. You are speaking as if you are owed some kind of answer and you're not. Listening to music, as you well know, is very subjective. Just because I hear a tree fall in the forest doesn't mean you are going to hear it nor does it mean you're going to hear it the same way I do. So asking for a specific section where this music has been improved is a waste of time. But... if you want to be more specific, I'm sure if you look at the wav forms of the Main Title, from each of the three releases, I'm sure you'll be able to tell the music has been worked on. I'm not clear on why you are pushing this nor am I clear on why you are being so antogonizing with me. We've never had any problems in the past, that I'm aware of. I'm also not clear on why you're making such an issue out of a product you are carrying in your store. Don't you want to sell this thing? Maybe not... Why stop here in this thread? Why not add your own review of the album and clearly state there is no improvement on the sound.
