Nonesuch Records Releases A Very Long Engagement soundtrack, December 7

Nonesuch releases the soundtrack to the Warner Independent Pictures film A Very Long Engagement, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and starring Audrey Tautou, on December 7, 2004. The soundtrack’s orchestral score is by Angelo Badalamenti and is conducted by Phil Marshall.

A Very Long Engagement (Un long dimanche de fiançailles) reunites Jeunet and Tautou, who last worked together on the highly popular 2001 film Amélie. A love story set during World War I, A Very Long Engagement is based on the Sebastien Japrisot novel by the same name. The film begins at the close of the war, when Mathilde (Tatou) receives word that her fiancé has been court-martialed and forced into the no-man’s land between the French and German lines to almost certainly die. Unwilling to accept that her lover is lost to her forever, Mathilde embarks on an investigation. In her quest to discover his fate, she learns of the horrors of war and the marks it leaves on those whose lives it has touched. A Very Long Engagement opens in New York and Los Angeles on November 26 and throughout the United States in December and January.

Angelo Badalamenti is widely considered one of today’s most original and innovative voices in film music. His long-standing collaboration with director David Lynch started with the cult classic Blue Velvet. He was nominated for Golden Globe Awards for his scores to Lynch’s The Straight Story and Mulholland Drive. He also worked with the director on Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (for which he won the Independent Spirit Award), as well as Wild at Heart and Lost Highway.

Badalamenti’s other credits include The City of Lost Children directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro; Arlington Road, starring Tim Robbins and Jeff Bridges; The Beach, directed by Danny Boyle and starring Leonardo DiCaprio; and Secretary, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal (see reverse for a complete credit list).

His work on A Very Long Engagement reunited him with Jeunet. Badalamenti is currently working on the score for Dark Water, directed by Walter Salles.

Absolutely lovely score, I have to say. If you're in for some very romantic music, this one is for you. Badalamenti's finest score in many years, in my opinion.

An absolutely perfect, gorgeous score (one of the three best of 2004), for quite possibly one of the ten best films I've ever seen. Badalamenti's best score for sure.
