Hey, where is everybody? December's half-gone already.

DIRTY HARRY (Lalo Schifrin) - the new Aleph release of this excellent score. Great great great. Will be getting MAGNUM FORCE and THE ENFORCER when they come out. This is part of the reason I got into film music in the first place.

MONSTROUS MOVIE MUSIC (selections from THE MOLE PEOPLE by Heinz Roemheld and Herman Stein; THEM by Bronislau Kaper; IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE by Herman Stein, Irving Gertz and Henry Mancini; and IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA by Mischa Bakaleinikoff) - now this is an absolutely great re-recording of these scores, beautifuly done. This is the OTHER reason I got into film music. I really must hand it to producer David Schecter on this. This is a top-notch package, and the booklet in itself is just amazing, packed with information about who did what on those old patchwork scores. Sound is splendid, playing very faithful to the originals etc. I can't rate this highly enough, in fact, it's funny, but the music in itself is almost a secondary pleasure. Almost. Will be putting my order in for MORE MONSTROUS MOVIE MUSIC soon.

THE HAMMER VAMPIRE FILM MUSIC COLLECTION (selections from LEGEND OF THE SEVEN GOLDEN VAMPIRES and KISS OF THE VAMPIRE by James Bernard; VAMPIRE CIRCUS by David Whitaker; and LUST FOR A VAMPIRE by Harry Robinson) - I didn't even know this existed, so I snapped it up immediately I saw it. I could be wrong, but I get the feeling that this may have been GDI's last release. These scores are incomplete, and I think that they just put together the only existing bits of those old scores (as they did for their FRANKENSTEIN compilation?), which doesn't really make for a completely satisfying listen. VAMPIRE CIRCUS in particular is wooly-sounding, and perhaps some of the best cues were lost for all the movies on the disc, so none of the pieces really build up to a climax, resulting in the architecture being all wrong. But just look at all those great Hammer composers here - even if the CD is imperfect, I think it's as perfect as we'll get, certainly if those were the only existing cues left. And, of course, this kind of film and music is what got me into film music in the first place. Did I say that about anything else?

Graham: Are you in close proximity to a college record library? If so, see if you can find an old vinyl copy of Schifrin's Rock Requiem. The title is self-explanatory. Or rather semi-explanatory. Because not all of it is rock music. Some of the tracks are jazzish or bossa-novish or mod-a-go-go cheezpoppish. Some of it is brilliant modern-classical choral music. And the infuriating thing is that it still hasn't been transferred to CD.

Luscious, no such SF concept exists nearby, I'm afraid. I don't think I know "Rock Requiem", but I remember (very vaguely) both "Black Widow" and "Towering Toccata". There was some crossover stuff on those too, although I think there were also, sadly, frightening leanings towards disco strutting on display. Still gotta love Lalo.
