The striking resemblance of the artwork on Varese's new Flight of the Phoenix CD and that of Con Air got me thinking.... How many CDs have airplanes bursting through the artwork at you? Within a moment's notice, I heard "ding ding ding" for the artwork on the score CD for The Aviator.

What the heck, should we just find out how many CDs/LPs we have with big airplanes (or any airplanes at all to open it up some) in our collections? Even special mentions for airplanes on the back artwork (a la Williams Always) qualify too.

We gotta do something with these collections besides listen to them.... fly away!

    Come on....

    Ace Eli
    Battle of Britain
    Ice Station Zebra
    Tora Tora Tora

Not hard, really. Or... I amuse myself.

    Airplane!
Memphis Belle (although the plane's not really flying!)

Maybe I should be asking about CD covers with horses on them. A little easier then? Bleh. Come on!

Sure I can think of two right off the bat there....Man From Snowy River and The Return To Snowy River both by Bruce Rowland.

How about trains? That's a bit more of a challenge. There's Silver Streak, Murder on the Orient Express, and Under Siege 2, to name a few.

Airplanes? On the "633 Squadron" LP cover they put you in the cockpit of a Mosquito.

There's jets on "The Right Stuff," a Helldiver taking off on "More Victory at Sea," and a B-52 on the "Dr. Strangelove" compilation CD.

Let's not forgot one of my favorite IMAX scores:
Sam Cardon's HEARST CASTLE: BUILDING THE DREAM

Does David Michael Frank's BOEING 777 count? The plane is not pictured on the cd's artwork...

Speaking of 633 SQUADRON, I would love to score a copy of the original U.K. LP which featured the gutsy original release poster art--you know, airplanes flying out at you with all hell breaking loose around them and on the ground. It puts me in mind of an aviation equivalent of the great Frank McCarthy illustration for THE GLORY GUYS, with what seems like every indian in North America charging at every U.S. Cavalryman.

It's a shame there was never an official release on Tiomkin's THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY. I remember having a paperback edition of the book which featured an incredible James Bama illustration based on the film characterizations. It would have made a hell of a soundtrack cover.

    Pearl Harbor! Yes....

That reminded me (dunno why) about the CD cover that will most likely win the "smallest planes" category in this thread:

    Captain Corelli's Mandolin

Those planes are so small, I first thought they were gnats gnatting around Penelope's breasts! Gnats gnatting!

    A few more spotted:

Battle of Neretva! (also qualifies for trains, too)

    Wings of Courage (IMAX) (it's a bi-plane, bi-plane, bi-plane)
