This year, lots of soundtrack CDs of both old and new music have been pumped out of CD factories with no regard. Now, look back to a point where you had a good-sized list of soundtracks you considered holy grails or holy hopefuls...
How has your list changed in the past few years?
Is your #1 holy grail still at the top? What is or was it?
What is your holy hopeful these days?
Was there something you always wanted that eventually came out as a limited edition, yet you somehow missed out??
We are collectors. It is our nature to always want something that is just out of reach. Woe is the day when we have it all!posted 12-09-2004 10:47 AM PT (US)

I still want a freakin' awesome Black Sunday release. My version still gets me going, but I think I could just forget about all the troubles in the world for just one minute if I had this disc in my player. I want to tear this house apart with that BLIMP BASS!

The only part about my wish list that keeps changing is the "Get Rid Of" section.

Still waiting for Disney to become the "good guys" and release Disney scores. Start with Goldsmith's One Little Indian, please.

Back to the Future is still at the top of the list, and will probably stay there for a long time.Ghostbusters is another holy hopeful, but that seems even less likely than BTTF.
Although, other titles (while not grails per se) like Predator and Die Hard have been released. It seems that more and more stones are being turned over with soundtracks, so perhaps there is hope in seeing those studio hearts grow, and their vaults opening.
As far as Ltd. Editions go, the only one I've missed out on is "Omega Man" and "The Towering Inferno". I didn't even know they existed until it was too late!

I suppose some obvious grails of differing metal:
Yared's Troy
Rabin's Texas Rangers
slightly more silver age: Paul Smith's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea...
more contemporary: Joel Goldsmith's once-planned release for The Untouchables television series seemed like it came *this* close.....Phillipe Sarde's Pirates....Goldsmith's Innerspace...posted 12-09-2004 12:49 PM PT (US)

Goldsmith's THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER is still at the top of my holy grail list, with Stothart's NORTHWEST PASSAGE in second place. I'm not hopeful that either one will ever happen.

Number one for me would be Back To The Future The Full Score. Followed after that would be the 2-disc set for Star Wars Ep II.Hopefully with July, 3rd 2005 being the 20th Anniversary for BTTF Part I either MCA or Varese releases the full score for it. That's hoping though...

Mine would be complete releases of all of the Indiana Jones scores, especially Temple of Doom and Last Crusade.

My holy grail list has just about disapeared now that I finally got a copy of "55 Days at Peking." The list exists neither on paper nor on computer, but in my head.I would like a CD with ALL the tracks to "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines," but will probably have to be satisfied with the suite in the upcoming Ron Goodwin compilation. I'll buy the "633 Squadron" CD when it comes out, too, but I already have this on vinyl.
My search for music from "Mystery Alaska" was what first drove me to the old "Dr. Tunes" site and my migration with the "Doc" to this site. And I would still like to see this released sometime in the future -- probably as part of a Carter Burwell compilation. There just isn't enough music in the movie to fill out a decent CD.
These would be the only titles that I would consider part of a holy grail list.

Managing to get this down to five:Addams Family Reunion (Amotz Plessner)
Big Trouble (James Newton Howard)
The Sandlot (David Newman; what could be keeping these labels?! It's a Fox score, for crying out loud!)
Small Soldiers - complete (Jerry Goldsmith)
When Time Ran Out... (Lalo Schifrin)posted 12-10-2004 08:15 AM PT (US)

The Caine Mutiny is still on my list. Acquiring a LP-CD transfer of the RCA album did nothing to assuage it.Ghostbusters
Back to the Future
Spartacus
Bladerunner
Stripes
Greystoke
Quo Vadis
MatildaSome of these are simply impossible or nearly so, but the quest for the grail should be a knight's greatest challenge!

There are countless treasures out there...some in varying degrees restoration.Much Friedhofer, one of my favorites, is lost due to deterioration of master elements. I understand "some" bits from various scores survive and we may get something of them in the future.
But first and foremost, and until such time as it happens, only "SPARTACUS" merits the top spot on my wish list.
It's, arguably, the finest score ever written for a motion picture, IMO.
As I already have the other four of my personal "top 5", I could be contented if "SPARTACUS" got released in my lifetime.
IF not, whatever pops up is usually pretty good, although I'd love a definitive mastering of "The Diary of Anne Frank" by Alfred Newman and of John Williams' "Monsignor.

I have found many holy grails in my lifetime, but I would truly like an official score release of heavy metal by elmer bernstien, even though I have a ripped version. I would also like an official the howling score, even though the ripped version I have of it is almost perfect(a true collector is never satisfied until its official).

I still can't understand how on earth Walt Disney Records did produce an excellent re-recorded suite of CINDERELLA's (1950) score, and DID NOT do the same thing with SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS (1937)???!!!??? Arrrgghhh. My holy grail will always be, not an entire score nor soundtrack, but simply the Climax Chase of SNOW WHITE as pure music. And a re-recording with 100+ member symphony orchestra would not hurt this most spectacular Disney score of all time.
