LINKIt sounds a lot like Thomas Newman's past scores, with maybe a hint of schemingness thrown in for some of the cues. I was actually expecting something waltzy and choral-laden, given the nature of the film (and after-all, they did use Edward Scissorhands and Addams Family in the trailer), but what I've listened to from the clips seems to be the opposite. That doesn't mean it's not good, it's just not what I expected. There are 29 tracks on the album.

This seems like the type of movie that Elfman was born to score, but I'm looking forward to seeing what Newman can do.

This sounds like a case of you guys falling in love with a temp track. Just because a trailer is scored one way, doesn't mean the actual film needs that same "voice." Perhaps Thomas Newman's score will be better than you imagined.I tried to read the Lemony Snicket series, but while I found the dour humor of the dust jacket very funny, the book did nothing for me. I WAS a depressing tale and I never even finished the first book. Hopefully the film will be more enjoyable. Remember, it IS "A Series of Unfortunate Events."
P.S. I'm totally over the Danny Elfman thing. He's great, but I don't need to hear "Edward Scissorhands" or "Pee Wee" again. I thought "Big Fish" (score and film) were very overrated. What I'd like to hear again from Elfman is something like "Sommersby" or "Black Beauty."

Well, I'm positive that Newman tried his hardest to avoid the Rota/Russian-Dance/circus/waltzy/choral style of such scores as Beetlejuice, Pee-Wee, Edward Scissorhands, Stepford Wives, and The Addams Family, and he definately succeeded. However, I was really hoping that this score would be in the same spirit of the aforementioned five. And "Big Fish" was underrated? Really? Who actually liked it? I know very few, but I personally felt it was the best film of 2003.
And for the record, the film "Lemony" looks like a disaster. With that said, there are certain films that judging by the look and tone, appear that a composer could have a blast with it. Lemony looked awful, but it looked like a composer could have a lot of fun with the gothic/comedic atmosphere. Newman, however (or the director), wanted a different approach. And to clarify one thing, I like the Snicket music from the sound clips (I like Newman in general)...I was just pretty sure that he would delve into waltzy/bouncy territory for this, and I'm disappointed that he didn't. The music is very modern and upbeat, with a tad bit of scheming.

I LOVE Thomas Newman. I always thought his "Little Women" score was underrated. It's one of those DVDS I watch just to hear the music lol.posted 12-02-2004 08:58 AM PT (US)

You can hear 17 minutes of Lemony Snicket courtesy of Chris Parsons's website.http://www.thesoundofmovies.net/TSOM-VOL1-HOUR2.ram
The first track is called Bad Beginning. I love the hypnotic alto-flute part.
