A CD issued by the Film Music Society (previously The Society for the Preservation of Film Music that issued that elusive Goldsmith CD) that included televison scores for CBS TV westerns by Herrmann, Moross, Waxman, and Friedhofer was for sometime only available directly from FMS if you paid $50 for a year's membership and an extra $20 for the disc. Now you can pick them up for $25 over at SAE! A much better deal if you ask me.

When I noticed that SAE were advertising Rozsa's The Jungle Book from FMS I checked to see if they'd be carrying this CBS Westerns disc. When I saw that they were I immediately placed my order.

Since this CD became available over at the FMS site I've heard very little about it: very few reviews or comments on what it's like. It suggests to be that very few people who frequent these and other boards have a copy of it.

Is it the case that, up until now these CDs preserved the music but there wasn't much dissemination of the music (because of the expense of joining the club and buying the CD?) Now that these CDs are becoming available hopefully the music will reach a bigger audience.

    Well done FMS.

Yeah, I looked around to get a CDR of it from somebody and none of my usual sources had picked it up. So I just went without. I hope FMS gets the message that asking a ton for memberships and trying to blackmail fans into paying up for these CDs doesn't work and they should just release all their stuff this way from now on.

I tried to order Jungle Book from SAE too but they seem to have run out. The BuySoundtrax guy seems to have a few up for sale still though.

I knew if I waited long enough I'd be able to buy this without paying $70 for it.

Beginning Monday, November 15, both CDs may be ordered my non-members directly from FMS.

I'd hate to be the guy or gal at the switchboard over at FMS later today!

JEC, you are partially correct if I've been told correctly by the FMS.

Non-members can order the Jungle Book CD without becoming a member at the $20 price tag.

The FMS cleared it up to me that the CBS Westerns disc, if purchased direct from FMS, still requires the $50 member fee, plus the $20 price for the CD. You must become a member to order the CBS disc from FMS.

I paid the $50 membership fee so I could get the CBS disc here in the MM store. If anyone was able to purchase the CBS disc from FMS without becoming a member, email me as soon as possible.

Anyone give these a listen yet and have comments? Leave them here, or review the CD in the reviews area (click "add review" on the above-linked pages)!

This in an excellent CD for those of us who love old westerns. The sound is pretty good, considering.
The Moross sounds like BIG COUNTRY and THE JAWHAWKERS, the Waxman reminds me of CIMARRON and TARAS BULBA; the Friedhofer is excellent and the Herrmann selections sound a bit like his TWILIGHT ZONE stuff.
This is well worth the price.

I'd suggest that the 17-minute suite of music from Herrmann's score to the episode of Cimarron Strip entitled Knife In The Darkness is reason enough to buy this CD!

It's another good example of Herrmann's unusual orchestration - bass clarinets, contra-bass clarinet, bassoons, harps, etc. It does recall his scores for The Twilight Zone - which isn't surprising as - apparently - this episode concerns Jack The Ripper set loose in the American West!
