    Edward Scissorhands (What a find!)
    Dick Tracy

... and this is just the beginning! Looks like the latter half of 2004 could be good for film scores!

    Van Helsing (Alan Silvestri)
Quite an action romp if you're just looking to blow off some steam this is the score to get....I feared for my speakers...

The Passion of The Christ (John Debney)
Several touching moments throughout the score the latter half is excellent. Alot of it lacks substance though.

    The Fury - John Williams

    The album re-record is astounding...just...um...wow.

The original score is very good as well, but the LSO recording sums up everything so beautifully. There's something very enthralling in the writing and the room rumbles whenever the main titles play.
Varese has less than 100 left!

The Manchurian Candidate - Rachel Portman(feat. Wyclef Jean) and David Amram

Interesting score. Very cerebral and like the movie, very menacing and disturbing at times. The Wyclef Jean song is terribly out of place, but is quite good on its own.

Amram's score is great especially since it's been taken from original 3-track masters and is supposedly light years ahead of the original issue of this classic.

Waiting on Timeline, Great Escape, and Great Train Robbery

I think possibly intrinsic emotion is what you mean by substance, and in that I agree with you - it can be quite a harsh listen apart from the film, particularly prior to 'Flagellation'.

Van Helsing, on the other hand, is immensely enjoyable. Not enough quiet cues, but a nice find from a second hand store this month.

Also from the second hand score was Kamen's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. So too Barrington Pheloung's Inspirations.

And the real finds of the last few months - Kaczmarek for Bliss and Quo Vadis, Yared for Camille Claudel and a 2 disc promo of Alberto Iglesias' scores from 1990-2000.

I gotta know...how are those Godzilla CDs?

Are they repackagings of the Futureland releases from 1993 or have they been remastered?

Wonder if some of those discs will make it stateside...

They are not re-packaging of the Futureland CDs. Even though they are in mono (except disc 2 of King kong v.s. Godzilla which is stereo) they have been remastered and have alternate cues, source music and dialogue tracks it appears. I haven't had a complete listen, just a quick run thru.

I have no idea if any will make it stateside. I bought mine from Ark Square in Japan for $96.00. Shipping was only 3 days, it was released on the 20th and I received it on the 23rd, I only paid $23.00 in shipping. From what I understand each box is limited to 1954 sets. Box #2 should be up for pre-order soon.

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (Bernstein recording) - Bernard Herrmann

Found this in the used CDs for $5.99. I know it's out of print so I picked it up immediately. This is one of the only Herrmann scores I haven't heard before (for some reason, I've been waiting for the right time) and I'm very, very taken with it, certainly one of his greatest works. I'll get the original recording soon, because from the clips I've heard that is the recording that will bring me to absolute tears...but with that said, Bernstein's is masterful.

    The Mission (Ennio Morricone)

I've been pretty obsessed with Morricone for the past two months or so. When I saw this in the store, I picked it up immediately (one of the reasons was because I thought it was out of print and hard to find, but I was wrong there). I knew it was a heavily choral score, but I wasn't expecting the wealth of tribal elements as well. I've never been too big of a fan of tribal music, but Morricone's impeccable orchestration makes it very interesting. Aside from the heavy tribal and chanting elements, there is a lovely, sensitive, quintessentially Morricone-esque theme that appears first on the album as "The Falls." Above all, it's a very relaxing album.

    On order:

From Russia, still: 72 Meters (Ennio Morricone)
From Sony Music: Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone

NP: "The Falls" from the Mission and the theme from "Ghost and Mrs. Muir" are playing in my head simultaneously. I better get them both out!

Expanded Bandolero just arrived and coming on the heels of my seeing the movie for the first time in a few years on DVD, this is the perfect opportunity to really get introduced to this Goldsmith score.

Winning the Goldsmith at Fox set was another highlight, but alas the bidding got out of hand on the MacArthur CD so I couldn't complete the Goldsmith trifecta. Hopefully another time with that one.

Pending is "The Outer Limits" TV soundtrack (Volume 1 I understand of a series that never had a Volume 2 from Crescendo).

Picked up Prisoner of Azkaban on Saturday. But I've only listened to about half of it. So far only "Hedwig's Theme," "Buckbeak's Flight" and "Window to the Past" have stirred my interest. I had to skip "The Knight Bus," too weird for me.
