I keep seeing all the big name mainstream film composers being talked about to death here, while a brilliant composer like Sakamoto is never mentioned. I just find it a little strange, since Sakamoto is one of the most respected musician/composer of our time.

I love a lot of Sakamoto's work, there's no doubt he's an incredibly talented composer and musician, I guess the fact is that he doesn't have a massive body of film score work if you compare him to the likes of Morricone, Barry, Goldsmith, Horner, Elfman, Zimmer, Williams and others who have vast quantities of scores to be discussed!

His, is the absolute coolest autograph I have in my collection, written in Japanese on my copy of The Last Emperor.

I consider LITTLE BUDDHA my favourite Sakamoto score, a fabulous mix of full orchestral/choral/ethnic that I think beats anything by the likes of Goldsmith or Zimmer in the same genre.

His Wuthering Heights is gorgeous and heartbreaking.

Sakamoto has always delivered, the only problem is finding scores of his. I particularly recommend two of his lesser known works, The Sheltering Sky (incorporating Arabic vocals beautifully) and Snake Eyes (the ultimate Herrmann homage with a hint of Sakamoto's beautiful melodies).

Joan, I've long been interested in finding Wuthering Heights. Do you know any place it can be bought through?

    Franzie,

I hate to say it, but you can probably find it on eBay. I see it there every so often.

It truly is a beautiful score.

Just a copy and paste from my rejected scores site:

Ah Ebay... I've only ever bought one thing on Ebay, and that was a 'Buy-it-now' option item. I hate flexible price situations. :S

Sakamoto is one of those great composers like Stewart Copeland who should be scoring a lot more films and much bigger and better films than they do or are offered for no understandable explaination.

The Sheltering Sky and The Wings of Honnamise are just amazing scores. Wuthering Heights goes on a tad long but it has a tremendously beautiful main theme. Wild Palms and Femme Fatale are equally wonderful.
