This is sad, sad news and it's true.
Award-Winning Composer Goldsmith DiesI'm devastated. Jerry Goldsmith was a legend. That's all I can say...
I was trying to think of my favourite Goldsmith score but there was just too many.
Rest in peace, sir.

I'm completely stunned... The man's music has meant so much to me. When I look back at the earliest roots of my love for filmmusic, Capricorn One, going to see Star Trek: The Motion Picture at the Cinerama Dome when it first opened, First Blood, Poltergeist, those roots are anchored in the music written by his hand. I wish I could have met him, just once, to thank him for the gift of that music. Fortunately, so much of his music has been preserved to disc so that it can be enjoyed as long as we can hear the notes. God bless Jerry Goldsmith.Mike Joffe

Goldsmith was the first composer I ever bought a soundtrack from (Gremlins on LP, then Gremlins 2 on CD...same year, I was about nine or so). I'll never forget how magical his music seemed to me as a child. When I was little my favorite cue of his was "Late for Work" from Gremlins. I had a very long time ahead of me to begin recognizing his name on a vast amount of other films. He was wonderful, one of my favorites, and one of the greatest composers that ever lived. We all knew he was ill, but I just never thought he would die. I suppose my infectious enthusiasm of the working artists that I love keeps me thinking that they're immortal, only to have their death crush me greater.
Everybody who was able to meet him I'm positive are very greatful. I always wanted to see a concert with him conducting, at the end meeting him in person briefly.
My favorite scores of his will always be "Seconds" and "A Patch of Blue." Just today I was listening to his wonderful and imaginative score for "Twilight Zone: The Movie." He will be missed, by so many.

This is a very sad day, not only was he a very lovely person, he was my favourite composer and i started listening to filmmusic because of Jerry. My deepest respect to his family and friends. He will be missed.
A sad day indeed.

Not really a surprise after the rumours concerning his health for the last months, but still a tragedy.Goldsmith was one of my favourite composers (I named my cat after him) ever since I watched The Great Train Robbery. There are many scores by him I call favourites (and many others I still like a lot), but if I had to single out one, it would probably The Final Conflict.
And last but not least, thanks to Goldsmith and his LSO concerts, I actually met some of the members of this board in London, at the concerts in 2001 and 2003 (and, most recently, 2004, but unfortunately Goldsmith was already too ill to conduct).

The great man is gone. And I can't believe it, but I'm actually crying. My condolences to his family and his fans. What a great life was this? How many of us can hope for the sort of influence he had on the souls of people - how many were inspired by him?My thanks to the many people round here whose enthusiasm for Goldsmith's music made him one of my favorite composers. (I especially think of people like James Southall whose long series of reviews on Goldsmith's career was a walk through of a wonderful opus.) Two years ago I knew nothing about "Under Fire", "Medicine Man", "Islands in the Stream", "Star Trek: The Motion Picture", "Mulan", "Total Recall" and many - so many - others.
NP Islands in the Stream (Jerry Goldsmith)
I heard Islands for the first time yesterday, and its theme will now be irrevocably associated with his life and passing as Shostakovich's Jazz Suite Waltz 2 was linked in my mind to Stanley Kubrick.

It's 7:30 in the morning -- I'm home from Los Angeles for the summer. My mother just came and woke me up to deliver the news.I can't believe it. Steve, your thoughts reflect my own. I've been listening to Jerry Goldsmith since before I can remember -- he and his music continue to be such an inspiration to me. I feel fortunate to have gotten to meet him a few times, and I can truly say he was a gentle, kind-hearted man with an extraordinary talent.
Jerry, rest in peace. You'll be deeply missed.

I just once again remembered this: The end credits of Gremlins 2 were one of the first pieces of music I recorded from the TV to a cassette tape as a child, long before I knew there actually was something called "film scoring".NP: Requiem (Anton Bruckner)

It was such an honor to meet the man when he gave a concert in Detroit a few years back. I remember fondly how cool he was. A geek was standing next to me with a bunch of his scores to sign. I remember him looking carefully at each one, making sure he commented on every one... "That's crap. I hated doing that one. Good one. Crap. Oh, wow, that one's rare- where'd you get that?"
He couldn't have been cooler when he signed my copy of Rudy, although I wasn't all that cool- I was pretty starstruck. My buddy, not quite a starstruck, pat him pretty hard on the back as we were leaving and told him to take it easy, and Goldsmith, as sincere as possible was like, "You too! Thanks so much for coming out tonight." I'll always remember that.Today may be a sad day, and I take comfort in knowing that when I get home tonight, I have 100+ reminders sitting on my CD shelf of what an incredible composer Goldsmith was. But I think most of all, I'm glad I have that one memory of meeting him, and discovering the man behind the music was just as cool.

His music will always be with us, but it's always sad when such a talent leaves our world. Like others, Goldsmith was one of the first composers I started recognizing when my interest in film music began, and he has remained at the top in my mind ever since. What a talent.I wish all of his family, friends, and fans peace. Thank you Jerry for inspiring and enlightening us with your magical talent.

This morning I finally got to play QB VII for the first time - that was the last album I played before I came home and saw the news on Teletext. I know it's not a shock, but it's like what Scott Bettencourt said when Michael Kamen died - we think they'll live forever. A bad day for movie music.

I am posting here, yet I have no words to say, this is how stunned I am. My absolute most favorite composer in the world is gone and I am truly saddened. There was so much left for him to write, to imbue with his unique sound and spirit, I will feel this loss for a long time. Rest in peace, Jerry, I hope you know how much you meant to so many of us...

I'm terribly terribly saddened by the news, even if it was inevitable. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that Jerry Goldsmith will always be a part of me - he was so hugely influential in my upbringing, almost like a third parent in a way.Words fail me at the moment, but I'm sure when the deep sorrow passes we can at least comfort ourselves with the knowledge that this great man's huge legacy will live on forever.

This news has been very hard to swallow. He'd been so active for so long, you just don't expect him to stop.Though I've always wished I wasn't struck so speechless, I'm very, very glad that I can still look back on meeting him in Detroit as one of the most supreme moments of my life, how anxious I was giving him my copy of A Patch of Blue to sign, and how happy I was that it was one of his favorites, too.
That's what I've got on now, and while it's always choked me up a bit, it's never been this difficult to listen to. The world has lost a creative giant and a great human being, and he will be sorely, sorely missed.

You know, this doesnt surprise me.I had a feeling this was coming a few days ago. First, we had not heard anything from him in awhile. He was really slowing down on the scores. And we all heard he was ill.
And I thought a few days ago, he may be much worse than many of us thought.
Then two days ago, I had the feeling he was near death.
I have followed his career since early 60s and had the opportunity to meet him at Springfield, Missouri in 1989. A true gentleman. We chatted some there while he was signing autographs. Very nice and polite.
I had received several letters from him in the 80s.
He will truly be missed. I know one thing, his music was a big part of my life and still is. Making the world a better place by uplifting people with music is a great gift. He surely had that.
Thanks, Mr G. Bless the family.
Take care, John.

I just learned this during my interview, I can't even begin to tell you hwat a shock it was.I am must say how fu(king disappointed I am with how he went, being left off projects cuase they didn't have any money, not even being able to live long enough to see some of his best works getting proper releases and Timeline as well.
This is indeed one of the sadest days in film music ever. I sincere condolences go out to the Goldsmith family. We may not feel the loss quite like family, be there is a void now in our hearts that will not be filled again and that we shall feel till our deaths.

A sad day indeed.I was lucky enough to meet Mr. Goldsmith on 2 occasions in the 80s, as well as see him conduct.
A true legend and unique musical voice. The type of craftsman you don't have much in film music anymore.
Luckily his music and the films which featured them will live on in our hearts and minds.
