Odd how one hears this tragic news. I was walking early this morning.
Hadn't turned on the computer. When I got home, there was a message
on my phone from my husband saying he'd heard on the radio that Jerry
had died. Hubby has no interest in film music, but he knew my passion for
Jerry. I so wanted to have him score The Game of Their Lives, but he's
left us a life time legacy of grand music. You know what I really find hard to do? When some of us "olders" chide
the "youngers" to expand their listening habits to the greats who have
passed away like Rozsa, Waxman, Herrmann, Tiomkin and others, I can't
imagine having to add a contemporary, Goldsmith, to that list. R.I.P. and God bless.NP Islands in the Stream

Last night I had the strangest dream. Absolutely true.I turned on the computer, and websites across the board were mourning the loss of Jerry Goldsmith.
There's not much I can say that hasn't already been said, but right now I'm looking through these pictures that were taken in Detroit a few years back. Pictures of Hatfield, Howard, and David towering over the man whose music towered over the film world for so many years.

This is so sad. I never imagined my life without a new score by my all time favorite film music composer. This has now come true.
This year is heavy. First my grandmother. Now Jerry Goldsmith. Although I didnīt know him at all, his music ment so much to me, I canīt spell it out in words.Seeing him in London last year was such a special occasion for me, and I also got his signature.Jerry Goldsmith. You will never be forgotten. You will live forever through your music.

I just read this terribly sad sad news. Jerry Goldsmith inspired me and so many other people over the years with his great music. He was one of THE composers who got me into film scores from the start. I knew he had been ill from some of the recent stories and pictures of him but it is still a great great shock. I really dont know what else to say. Though the man, the Legend, may have gone, his music will live on forever.R.I.P Jerry Goldsmith

As long as music exists, Goldsmith will be with us.
I can't say more than that.

I found out a couple of hours ago, from Varese's News page (just hoping there'd be a club announcement or something). What can I say that other posts above haven't already said, probably better? Jerry Goldsmith was far and away my favourite film composer, whether from films 30 or 40 years old, or his most recent works. Could such diverse works as ALIEN, LOONEY TUNES, LAST CASTLE, STAR TREK and FIERCE CREATURES really have flowed from the same pen? Incredible to think so. And only a true genius could have found inspiration in films like KING SOLOMON'S MINES or THE SWARM to bless them with such marvellous scores.
We are all the poorer now.

Well Damn it all to hell!I can't believe it, although I have no choice but to beleive it.
I didn't know him as a person but I knew him through his music. A giant who stood astride the world of film music.

Wow. I too had funny suspicions lately that this news was imminent. Shaun, you, Tim and James have spoken for me as well. Gonna pull up the Detroit threads and reminisce some more. And I smile just thinking that he might actually have read the "rolled up sheaf" and then smiled as well before tossing the thing away.

You were so nice about HOW you gave him the thing, Howard, that I doubt it turned out quite like that.I have had occassion to be in more than a few fights in my life, bar- or otherwise. Never took a punch to the gut like I did online just an hour ago. Joe Rixman called me this afternoon, alerting me that there was a biography/retrospective on the man's work on CNN. "Great!", I thought. I had NO IDEA he had passed on until I signed on, as I looked at CNN for and hour and never saw the special.
This is so sad. I feel like I just got kicked all the way up the stairs from some smoky kellar. From transporting me through an often troubling childhood to being one of my few sources of solace in the hospital and beyond, I simply have no frame of reference for a life without his magic in it. That the magic is captured for all time is a blessing and miracle of God; that its source is expired is the hardest news I've had in some time.
I read Shaun's, James' & Howard's posts with interest and a kind of emotional bittersweet that beggars description. It was a special time. How profound was the man's talent and impact that it could get so many disparate men together (and Shaun, too!
) for fellowship and thrall?I cried - and always will, a little.

Those who would like to hear a randomly selected stream of Goldsmith scores should consider Streaming Soundtracks, a good internet radio station which has disabled all requests and is on a Goldsmith-only loop right now:

This immediately brings tears to my eyes. Jerry wrote powerful, innovative, emotionally satisfying. beautiful music. As the great composers were to the classical era, Goldsmith was to ours.He was and always will be a musical giant, and the world was fortunate to have him while we did. Goodbye Jerry and God bless.
Now I'm crying.

I just heard moments ago and I still can't believe it. He was arguably one of film music's finest composers. Though Jerry Goldsmith is no longer with us physically, he will live on spiritually because of the wonderful music he has composed. Sorry I can't be more original.

Jerry was a unique voice, that was almost always recognized as soon as you heard the first few notes of each score. One of the greatest composers of all time, and oft copied as well. Jerry was loved, and adored by almost all soundtrack fans, and fellow composers as well.
I always enjoyed his great action scores, Total Recall, Rambo 1-3, etc. and when it came to sweet melody, no one could put my mind at ease like mr. Goldsmith.
This is tragic news indeed, but his soul lives on through his music, Jerry will be missed, and can never be replaced. Sure their will be those who use his stylings, and may even come close, but in the end their is only one Jerry Goldsmith. God rest your soul Jerry, you will be missed.

This is the worst news, really. Even at 75, at top of his game, his music had more vitality than much of the younger composers.
God bless you, Mr. Goldsmith.

Mike, I'm sure you're going -- please let me know how it is. My mother offered to fly me in for a day, but with Brian here in town, and no transportation there in Los Angeles (my vehicle is here in Dallas), it just doesn't seem like a good idea.

What can I say that hasn't already been said... I have to be honest, given the recent rumours about Mr Goldsmith's health, his passing didn't come as a complete shock, but this is very sad news nonetheless. I've been listening to his music since I was 13 years old. Legend, Under Fire, Gremlins, Night Crossing, Powder, Wind and the Lion, and Basic Instinct... just a handful of my favorites, but there are so many more! Rest in Peace Mr Goldsmith and thanks for the music which has enriched all of our lives.posted 07-23-2004 08:10 AM PT (US)

@Marian, Timmer, Shrubs, JimWare, just to name a few...I am so deeply shocked that I don't even know what Goldsmith CD to pop into my player.
My house is usually filled with film music the moment I get home.
For the past hours it has been quiet.I honor the man, I was so privileged to meet in 2000 and 2003. The man I got to ask a question at the pre-concert talks. The man who drives my work, my studies. The man that brought together a group of friends from all of Europe whom I now consider my friends.
Truly an era of experimental music dies with Jerry.
