Aintitcoolnews has reported that Bryan Singer and the XMen 2 scribes will be helming Superman Returns, meaning to many people (or at least the many other people who liked X2 for whatever reason) the Superman project is now looking more assured than it ever was. Exactly what this will mean for Singer's involvement in Logan's Run (yes please! and bring Elliot Goldenthal not John Ottman!) and X3 is uncertain as yet.Somewhere down the track, Bryan Singer will have to choose a composer for this film. And if he has his way, I imagine it will be editor John Ottman. Now the AICN article mentions that this new film will possibly (given the title) exist in the same universe as the Richard Donner films. What I'm hoping this means is that John Williams' score is not too far away either. I seem to be alone (well, I'm not, but it makes me feel like a subversive fellow to say it) in my failure to appreciate the temp track classic compilation score Ottman put together for X2, and overall to me the music felt really anaemic for a superhero film (even one with THAT much angst about rejection). Can Ottman cut it here (editing pun intended)? If it was an original musical universe, I'd say 'NO!' without a doubt - at its best it would be sort of like (but not as good as) the Newt's Peter Pan relative to John Williams' Hook. If it's an adaptation of Williams' themes and style - there's some hope here.

I can't imagine anyone writing a better soundtrack for a Superman movie than what John Williams composed. Fabulous music.Sometimes, however, when I listen to THE LAST STARFIGHTER by Craig Safan, I think this composer should be our next composer for a Superman movie. He is painfully under utilized by motion pictures.

For what it's worth,I'd have lied to see if Robert Zemeckis could direct Superman and have Silvestri do the score. But the big problem, no matter who they get to direct/score, is that they will always be standing under the shadow of their much loved predecessors.
But if anyone can fill the shoes... could do worse than Bryan Singer.

I'd say give Richard Kelly (Director of Donnie Darko) a chance. I bet he could come up with something fantastic.posted 07-19-2004 05:09 PM PT (US) Old Infopop Software by UBB
