I fear EG's Movie scoring is going down hill. His excellent cue's of depecting dark films are tied to Danny Elfman's scoring as well. Though now I count that Elliot Goldenthal's Scoring has trickled down to 1 movie a year...and it's looking that 2004 will not be touched by his grace. AHH Goldenthal....Were the heck are you?!?!?

While I don't know that his music has been heading downhill, Elliot Goldenthal is probably working on his Grendel opera. His next film score would likely be for Neil Jordan or Julie Taymor, his most reliable collaborators.

Grendel is supposed to be premiered by the L.A. Opera some time in 2006.

Also, the brass quintet Extension Ensemble just put out a new CD called "New York Presence" on Summit Records which includes a recent piece by Goldenthal.

Maybe he's just getting more interesting work in the concert hall these days. And putting an opera together is no small task, so I can cut him some slack for slowing down on his film scoring.

Then again, there are still quite a few Goldenthal scores for me to check out, so I can stand the wait for new material.

(Tangent Alert!!....That's part of what makes Richard Band's disappearance so frustrating - not only should he be getting better work, but I already have everything there is to have. La-La Land's expanded From Beyond was a godsend for me.)

Wow, thanks a lot for the heads-up on that new concert CD, James! I didn't about that, and ordered it just seconds after I read your post (as the completist that I am)!!

Goldenthal does not need to be a workhouse just to provide us fans of his with more music. I love each score of his and I do not mind that he takes breaks from film and then also takes his time to score each film, it makes each score that much more impressive. And besides, SWAT was just last year and it kicked ASS! Frida was the year before and it is a gorgeous work and I also still revel in the glory of his Final Fantasy score, so it's greast to just continue to enjoy all the music he has provided us thus far...

Now if we could get expanded Alien³ and Sphere albums in the meantime, noone would have to complain...

True that he's continueing his opera preparations nowadays, Last I heard he was Tasked by Neil Jorden to score something for him, but i guess it'll be awhile.

Well... some of us round here like expanded scores, and in this case it has nothing to do with reliving the experience of two fairly average films.

Well, I do like Alien³ a lot and consider it very underrated, and I did like Sphere a lot before reading the novel, and now still like it, though not as much as before...

But: In both cases, I don't really remember the connection between movie and music. Seems like for Goldenthal scores, this isn't something I memorise easily. I don't even remember what music exactly is missing.

I do however remember hearing some very good unreleased music in the Alien³ featurettes on the DVDs, and I also remember people complaining that half of the Sphere score is unreleased, including some of the best material.

So, yes, I'd like expanded releases for these scores, and it doesn't have anything to do with the movies.
