Today's Daily Variety reports that producer Tony Adams ("Victor/Victoria") and Marvel are teaming up to bring everyone's favorite webslinger to Broadway. Julie Taymore ("The Lion King") will direct from a book by Neil Jordan ("The Crying Game") with songs by Bono and The Edge ("U2").

Seriously, folks, you just can't make this stuff up.

Say, how about opening with, "I've got the world on a string"...?

As much as I admire Neil Jordan's "The Crying Game" (and excellent film and script), this musical sounds like a complete disaster.

Why is Neil Jordan involved in this? It just doesn't make a bit of sense.

They tried this with both Batman and Superman many moons ago.

Julie Taymor and Neil Jordan? Does that mean Elliot Goldenthal will be involved?!? Weird news if it's true. I thought Taymor and Goldenthal were still working on his opera.

These things take a long time to come to fruition. Goldenthal's opera is premiering in L.A. in 2006 ... I'm guessing Taymor would move on to Spider-Man afterwards.

I'm also of the opinion that this sounds sort of catastrophic, despite the amount of talent involved. I can't even imagine what this would sound/look like...but maybe that's a good thing? I don't know, it's just such a strange idea....

Still... the possibility of Bono and Taymor's lyricism combined with melodies by Elliot Goldenthal is somewhat tantalising. Now that I think about it - Bono could probably play the Green Goblin a la Mr. Macphisto.
