Well Arty Morty over at AICN seems to like Revell's score:quote:

And Grame Revell, whose work as a composer is always hit and miss with me, delivers a great score here, building off his PITCH BLACK themes even as he gives epic support to the imagery.

I get the strong impression they won't fudge on a release this time and wait a long time for a promo. I bet someone will release an official score CD shortly.

I bought the soundtrack, and have to say its much better than what I was expected. I haven't been too happy with Revell in the past. I gave up on him with Collateral Damage. But Riddick hints that there is still hope.
Though he still experiements with crazy ethnics percussion, and electronics, but its not over the top this time and as in your face this. Riddicks stands tall with is really large orchestra and choir that takes center stage. And almost non stop action. It has two themes that I can remember, but I recall very few slow and softer moments. Mainly if you think if Vin Desil's attitude in every movie he has done ecxept maybe The Iron Giant, you can get a good idea of the attitude of this agressive action score.quote:

Thanks for the info...I had missed that it was being released yesterday.Honestly...for some reason Chronicles of Riddick happens to be one of the films I am most interested in seeing this summer.

Hmmmm... the clips... are surprisingly palatable. How cool. I'm anxious to pick this one up, now.
Methinks Chronicles of Riddick will become a new favorite among trailer music editors...

I was getting worried there would be no repraises of the themes from Pitch Black, but then I reached clip 3. Whew! But I hope they Revell repraises certain things, like:
- The repeating percission loop
- The female vocal thing. The "Kill the infadale!" vocal. And I am quite worried here; other than Williams, I can't think of any composer who has scored all the sequals to a film series.
The last thing I want is to see "Music by Marco Beltrami" or who ever in the 2nd, or 3rd Riddick installements.posted 06-10-2004 09:30 PM PT (US)

Just got back from seeing it. I'm usually not that big on revell's scores, but this one is actually pretty good. The movie, I thought was surprisingly good as well, I may actually go see this one again.

ok, so I bought the score, and turns out, this score is actually awesome as hell. As I said before not too many of revells scores has really impressed me, but this is really good, both in the movie, and as a stand alone score. I might actually consider this my favorite score of 2004, so far. Still looking forward to a few more scores, but so far this is the only one that has managed to surprise me this much.

Great score....great film. I was concerned that high concept sci-fi and Riddick would not mesh well. But they do.Only complaint...wish the film had been about 20-minutes longer...Still at 2-hours it is only a minor complaint.
Unfortunately, with the opening weekend box office I am crossing my fingers that word of mouth carries this one (as well as international box office) because I think Twohy has a lot of good ideas and can take this franchise far. I just hope it doesn't die a quick death.
My local critic said this film was worse than Battlefield Earth...I'd like to someday understand what goes through these goobers' minds.

I agree quill, this film kicked some @ss, but doesnt seem to be fairing well at the box office, or with movie critics(morons).
I usually dont listen to critics anyway, because I usually only agree with maybe 8% of thier reviews, but I guess most everybody else does, considering movies usually do bad at the box office unless the critics rave about it.
anyway I truly want the sequal to riddick to be made, so hopefuly its dvd sales are good when it comes out.

Yeah, it was definitely all the rave reviews from critics that made Kangaroo Jack, Scooby-Doo and Bringing Down the House popular enough to have smashing opening weekends.

Riddick had a lot of great ideas, great moments, neat visual things...but also a LOT of laughably bad stuff (every time someone mentioned the planet "Crematoria" at the screening I was at the audience was in hysterics). I do agree it needed to be longer but that would have hurt its box office take even more.

I saw CoR this weekend and was positively surprised by how much I enjoyed it! I only went because a friend invited me and so I wasn't expecting much. Wow! What a fun flick! I'm also not usually a fan of Revell's scores but this one was really good. I loved the reprisal of the, as I call it, hurry theme from Pitch Black. Hmmm, better start throwing Father's day hints...

Kirk...I would submit that even those films had many more 2-star or mixed reviews from critics. The overall bashing Riddick has received seems quite unfounded. I am not sure what they were looking for out of this movie.Needless to say, it will be a shame if people stay away from this due to a critic's self-indulged rantings.
Sci-fi pics such as this are far and few between. This film was not only energetic but sported an imaginitive look, solid acting, and competent special effects. A poor box office and such ruthlessly negative reviews does note bode well for future films of this sort.

CoR will be getting a lot of recomendations from me. 16 of my fellow workers, and friends have already seen it, or are going to see it because of my enthusiasm for the film. Unfortunately I dont know too many more people to suggest the movie too, and I dont think 16 people are going to make a big difference as far as ticket sales go.
Anyway I tried, I really must see the sequal.

So I've been listening to the 'CoR' score all week now and I gotta say I think it is fantastic. Exciting, epic sound with interesting orchestration. Wonderful stuff! Just the right length album too. It gives a lot of great material but doesn't wear out its welcome. I was a little put off by the short cues at first. I would have liked to see some longer ones that develop a bit more but the album works just fine as is.I'm disappointed that the film isn't doing better in theaters though. It doesn't deserve the kind of harsh treatment doled out by critics. Hopefully 'CoR' will find a larger audience on DVD.
