I've been thinking for a while of putting together a CD of some of the best marches from various film scores for an uncle of mine who is in the military. The plan is that they generally come from slightly more obscure soundtracks that it is unlikely he's heard.

I can only think of a few tracks for it that absolutely would have to be there:
    * The March from Masada by Goldsmith.
    * The Rebel's March (Rafael's Theme) from Under Fire by Goldsmith.
    * The Main Title from The Hunt for Red October by Poledouris.
    * Probably 'The Training March' or 'The Battle Montage' from Farewell to the King by Poledouris.
    * The main title from Where Eagles Dare.
    * One of the Roman marches from Rosza's King of Kings score.

I'm sure I'm only scratching the surface here, but can anyone suggest some excellent marches that have been left out here? I'd rather not throw in Williams' holy trinity of Star Wars, Raiders or Superman.

My favorite is Addison's march in A Bridge Too Far. I also like Bernstein's The Great Escape march.

    The Winter March from Patton

The Terranaut March from The Core

March of the Dead from Army of Darkness

The Patriot would be pretty good too, although I don't know how anti Williams you're trying to be

Pity I don't have The Core! Oh, I'm not anti-Williams, I just want to keep the most recongnisable tunes on the planet off the CD, so my uncle can dream of his own life in the armed forces. The Patriot will be a good one though - thanks!

The Lava march from Silvestri's Volcano (also might try Judge Dredd..."Voyage to Mordor" from Rosenthal's Lord of the Rings...Williams' Boston Pops By Request album has several marches, including 1941, Midway, Liberty Fanfare, and The Olympic March....

You know, I love the march that Silvestri composed for Dracula in Van Helsing...

More obscure? Did Pluto Nash have a march?

    Bang! Drumroll!

...let me think ... can't think of any obscure ones. I can think of plenty known ones though. LEt me know when I can be of use in that department.

Fine then - I'll take known ones. BTW, when I said 'obscure', what I meant was it was to be obscure to a person who doesn't listen to film scores.

Well, first off let's start with:

    Coloenl Bogey March

    Then these:

    "Raider's March" Indiana Jones

Does the cue "Willow's Theme", from Horner's Willow, the action bits, quite count as a march?

Star Wars - Do I have to say more?

There's a cue from the GNP CD 7 Days that sound a like a heroic themed cue that could be considered a march.

Does the second part, the action stuff, from Predator, count?

What about the Main Title from Goldsmith's The Boys From Brazil?

My mind drew a blank when you asked. I could barely pick these out.

Now that I hadn't thought of!

I was emailed this set of suggestions as well:

    quote:

Alex North - The Devil's Brigade
Dimitri Tiomkin - Pax Romana [Fall of the Roman Empire]
Maurice Jarre - Grand Prix, or any number of his other scores.
    Ron Goodwin - 633 Squadron

You could throw in some of Akira Ifukube's military marches from the many Godzilla and sci-fi films he's scored.

Lots of marches by Newman would be good too.

    Captain from Castille
Entrance of Caligula from Robe, that trumpet fanfare is fabulous
    and so on

Steiners Distant Trumpet is great-this score should be on CD-its dynamite, fake Troy Donahue film-but what a score
so is the Caine Mutiny march
and the one in Santa Fe Trail is used in several films, and the Darby Rangers march

that concert verson of the Winter March on the LP is fantastic by Goldsmith-that version not in film

There are just dozens of these by Williams, Goldsmith and others, dozens.

General Santa Anna march from Alamo is another and all the great variations of it in film-my favorite being when the Mexican troops first scene-what a version-starts quiet and builds and when you see all the troops marching in a big wide view the full orchestra is playing it-wow|!|!!!!

Dont forget Poledouris' two rousing marches for Red Dawn in the end titles-what a march and Flight of the Intruder. Both great.

How about that march from THE LORD OF THE RINGS? ...."no no no! not THAT one" Leonard Rosenman's LOTR!

It's track 18 Voyage To Mordor; Theme From Lord Of The Rings. I think it's a superb march!

A friend of mine once remarked "This is the theme for Lord Of The Rings?? sounds more like a war movie!"

That El Cid march is one of my all time favorites. When I first heard it on the road show engagement at Ridglea Theatre in 1963 it almost blew us out of the theatre. Played at the intermission. It was so good I had to have the LP so I went out and b ought it. I played the heck out of it.

    What a march and score.

Many by R0zsa-Parade of Charioteers and many of his Roman marches from all those scores are great.
