Hi there. I need your help.

I've put together a powerpoint presentation of stunning photography (not by me) outlining the history of the Maltese Islands. If I may say so myself, it turned out quite nicely, but finding suitable music is proving to be quite a Herculean task.

    Specifics:

    • Around 5 to 6 minutes in length.
    • Ideally not too loud. It musn't distract from the images and text.
    • Preferably not sad or ominous.
    • Starting off quietly and maybe building up subtlely.
    • Ideally it would have a sense of awe and discovery to it (sort of like Cracking the Russian Codes from Beauitiful Mind, but not that in your face.
    • For bonus points, it would have regular key changes so that I can synch the images to the music easily.

My draft copy is synched to 'Birth' from Cirque de Soleil's Journey of Man (excellent track btw). It starts of brilliantly and works great but then towards the end it gets dark and depressing.

      Any ideas?

      Thanks a zillion in advance.

Without seeing the presentation, I'm thinking maybe an edit of the track 'Stored Memories (Monica's Theme)' from Williams' AI, Artificial Intelligence. Might border on being a bit too sad, but the big problem would be editing it down from 10 minutes.

Possibly you want something that has a specifically Mediterranean feel. There is some strong work on Warbeck's 'Captain Correli's Mandolin' that may be more up your alley.

And for some reason I'm thinking the 5-6 minute 'Bajo Fuego' from Under Fire might work. It definitely builds, and shifts between 'large' and 'small' moments.

Here are some initial findings dunno if these will work, I'm tryin! )

    1) Final Fantasy VI Grand Finale: Tina
    2) Thirteen Days: The Will of Good Men
    3) October Sky: October Sky
    4) The Day After Tomorrow: President's Speech (This isn't a shameless plug ...it has some of what you're looking for)
    5) Musashi: Brivido di Guerra
    6) Princess Mononoke: The Legend of Ashitaka
    7) Dances with Wolves: Farewell and End Title
    8) The Ghost and the Darkness: Welcome to Tsavo
    8) Alex North's 2001: Moon Rocket Bus (this would be ideal if it weren't for those conspiring strings...)
    9) Medal of Honor- Frontline: Operation Market Garden (could be too militaristic)

Anyway, I hope these at the very least stir you in the right direction!!!

    NP: Interview with the Vampire

Considering the topic I would recommend you to try maybe Newton Howard's "The Egg travels" from Dinosaur (2:43) and "The city of Atlantis" from Atlantis (2:48) With some edition it could be a great combination. I'm not sure, but I think that those two pieces would be great together with good imagery of the islands.

If you don't like the choral idea maybe you could try some Trevor Jones like thirteen days or something less risky and yet elegant could be a Patrick Doyle, say Great expectations or Sense and Sensibility.

    I hope it helps

Wow, and I thought I had 4 new replies!

Anyway - thanks for the help. Some great ideas there. I spent all day trying them out. Thirteen Days and Day after Tomorrow would have been great but the military drums sounded really out of place when the slides are discussing ancient history. AI worked quite well but felt too sad, as did Dance with Wolves.

The Captain Corelli suggestion got me thinking, and I went on a search for some lovely 'mediterranean' sounding jovial music for the second part of my presentation (about Culture, beaches and festivities in Malta). I eventually settled on Anton Karas' Third Man theme, which fit like a glove.

For the ending, I eventually chose the first portion of Apollo 13's End Credits, which I love, and which so ethereal and lovely.

As for the first part, I'm sticking with 'Birth'. I edited it a bit to make it longer, so that I could edit out the dark bit at the end. Works fine now.

Thanks for all the help. I would post the final result online, but it's a hefty 44 Megs.

Yeah, what's with the End Credits to Apollo 13 being so different from the rest of the movie? Oh, and I love it too.

(Sorry for the inconvenience with the repeated posts. Technical complications. )

Apollo 13 is a great idea; it will surely work very well. Just as a suggestion, since I see you are thinking in Horner for the presentation, you could also consider Horner’s Brainstorm, like “Michael’s gift to the princess” (around 6 minutes) Although Apollo 13 might be even better.

I'm late on this, I realize, but if your current choices don't wind up doing it for you, try

BRAINSTORM Track 4 (6:53) "Michael's Gift to Karen".

It actually does everything you listed (even the key changes, I think).
