During this weekend - because falling in love with the animated movie SPIRITED AWAY and its music - I returned to one Disney-movie I've never liked, MULAN. Although there would be lots of things to say about why MULAN still doesn't impress me, I don't go there...

    Just one thing:

One of the greatest finale pieces composed by Jerry Goldsmith and not even appearing in the movie for which it is composed for.

What I'm talking about? Ofcourse, MULAN's finale which is included on the soundtrack in "Suite from Mulan". The power of this specific "finale" cue is amazing, and it would have heightened the ending dramatically - but no, the stupidos at Disney wanted to end the movie with Stevie Wonder. Crazy!!!!

The musical supervision of MULAN is one thing why the entire movie is a really badly mixed bag. If the music was completely in the hands of Goldsmith, I bet that the final movie would have managed to touch me.

I believe that Paul Buckmaster arranged the suite from MULAN based on Goldsmith's music and the songs that were in the film. I could be wrong, but my understanding is that's how it came into being. It would also explain why that suite isn't on the Academy Promo that Disney put out for MULAN.

Great that someone actually read my mind - I really would like to know was the "Suite from Mulan" a Goldsmith creation or not?

    Facts, please!! Thank you.

I'm beginning to wonder: Is *anything* Goldsmith plays at his concerts arranged by himself?

I think this and Gremlins (of the ones he does regularly) are the only ones that aren't. I think I've heard him do Silva Screen arrangements of Great Train Robbery and The Shadow as well, but only once each.

From what I've heard, the two Medleys (Motion Picture/TV Themes) weren't arranged by him either. And he said himself that the ST:TMP suite performed at the 2003 London concert was arranged by John Mauceri.

I'm pretty sure that the concert arrangement of Masada was arranged by Goldsmith.

If indeed it was Paul Buckmaster that arranged the "Suite from Mulan" that's on the official soundtrack, he did an outstanding job of making it sound like Goldsmith. Of course, I'm sure that was the point.
