This score is SO outstanding! Like, seriously.

I somehow lost my copy over a year ago, and a friend was kind enough to let me have it in mp3. All I can say is I wholly remember why I had this in my car and my stereo almost all day. It's just magic.

The thing is I'm not really familiar with Morricone's works. I've heard about 5 or so in full, and those generally to be operas or epics of some sort (The Mission, M2M); are there any more (comedic?) efforts like Melena that warrant listening? Though I do very much dig the romantic portions here, too, it's those quirky bits (IE 75% of the CD) that keep me coming back. The theme is distastefully addictive.

What are your guys opinions on this score? Lately, I haven't been listening to scores too much, but Melena really did rekindle that Love I still have for some, and stands so very well as a seperate listening experience.

    So, 1) Thoughts... 2) What's in it's league?

    Ta ta.

Malena is a wonderful score. I haven't heard it away from the film yet, but it's one I've been meaning to buy. I also really loved the film.

    Try "Cinema Paradiso."

    Much better film and score.

In general Morricone's work with Giuseppe Tornatore is fantastic.

Hasta, for those MALENA-like quirky Morricone scores, I'll second Bond's recommendation for the music he did for the Tornatore films. I don't have CINEMA PARADISO, but THE LEGEND OF 1900 is just wonderful. The way he incorporates 20s jazz into the soundtrack is simply amazing, and yes, sufficiently quirky.

I'd like to once more sing the praises of a lesser-known Morricone work which is absolutely beautiful - NINFA PLEBEA (THE NYMPH). As in MALENA there are several moments of cock-eyed quirkiness - tangos etc - but it's all held together by some of the composer's most heartfelt writing, from sunny, joyous cascading melodies to darker, moody romanticism.

These ones are all dramas with a comedic twist, and they are great listening:

I magi randagi (We free kings)
    L'uomo delle stelle (Star maker)
    Ninfa plebea (The nymph)
    Stanno tutti bene (Everybody's fine)

    Enjoy!

Morricone's son Andrea is very talented as well. He made a beautiful score to "Liberty heights". You will love this one as well, I'm sure.
