Does anybody out there know what the Top 10 (or so) most popular film scores are?

Also, do you know what the most recognizable film music cues are?
For example, the strings in Psycho or the theme to Jaws, etc...

    Thanks,
    Matt

Did this with my film class in Grade 11, and here's what they got (from a mixed CD I made):

    Themes/cues:

    Shaft
    James Bond
    Mission: Impossible
    Star Wars
    Indiana Jones
    E.T.
    Beverly Hills Cop
    Star Trek: The Motion Picture
    Braveheart
    Titanic
    Jurassic Park
    Batman (Elfman's)

(there's more but they escape me at the moment)

Top Ten... no clue, but you can bet Star Wars and Jaws are on there, and maybe even Gladiator, and of course Titanic is... I'll pass this on to someone else:

Popular now or for all time? It does make a difference.

In no particular order, these are my candidates:

    Gone With The Wind
    Dr. Zhivago
    Star Wars
    Jaws
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
    James Bond Theme
Carmina Burana (This one is kind of cheating as it wasn’t composed for a film, but it gets ripped off so often or just played straight that most people know it from films, not the concert hall.)
    Psycho
    Born Free
    Chariots of Fire
    Pink Panther Theme
2001: A Space Odyssey [Also Sprach Zarathustra]
    Godfather Waltz
    Summer of ‘42
    Rocky
    Love Story

I could also name a few popular tunes derived from film like:

    Laura
    Stella By Starlight (The Uninvited)
    The High and the Mighty
    Ghostbusters
    High Noon
My Heart Will Go On (Titanic)
Windmills of My Mind (The Thomas Crown Affair)
    As Time Goes By (Casablanca)
Green Leaves of Summer (The Alamo)
Everybody’s Talkin’ At Me (Midnight Cowboy)
    Moon River (Breakfast at Tiffany’s)
    The Way We Were
    Suicide is Painless (M*A*S*H*)
    Shaft

I think "record/LP" sales showed that Saturday Night Fever was one of the best sellers ever; however, I didn't consider it a soundtrack, but some do.

David Shire certainly made a healthy living from it

John Barry's Goldfinger soundtrack was a gold disc seller in America knocking the Beatles 'A Hard Days Night' off the top of the charts! How many film composers do you know who could knock the Beatles off top spot?

Good point, Timmer. I forgot about Shire, but I don't think the LP I owned had Shire's music, just BGee's songs. Hey, my memory could be wrong.

He has 2 or 3 solo tracks on the album. Considering the number of LPs, CDs cassettes and 8 tracks sold, I couldn't imagine Shire being anything but happy with his share of the pie!

I had the album once, the only track I can remember from Shire is the very catchy Manhatten Skyline, I read somewhere that Shire made an awful lot of money from being involved with this album, if memory serves correctly this was the biggest selling album of all time up until the release of Wacko's THRILLER album?!

It seems passe now and extremely dated but it was a very cool album in the 70's.

Saturday Night Fever was played at so many parties that it surpassed soundtrack for the film and became the soundtrack for the 70's!

I had a very good time while that album was playing!

Still have mine, Timmer! The three tracks credited to David Shire are "Manhattan Skyline," "Night on Disco Mountain," and "Salsation."

Haven't listened to this LP in ages! Think I'll dig out my platform shoes and plop it on the turntable! On second thought...
